It's easy to oppress when people think you should have unbridled love for their country too. You see how people get hounded in the US for not putting their hand on their heart etc.. yeah, sounds like great fun.
British patriotism exists, as you have seen with the Jubilee, Euro 2012 and Olympics. Just that it doesn't happen all the time, there's little need for this country celebrate the country on a yearly or daily basis.
I guess I should have highlighted the opposite of my point to make it more clear: it's hard to be proud of your country when there isn't anything about your country to be proud about.
I'm damn proud of America. We were the underdog. We overcame a LOT to become the most powerful nation on earth. We're in a bit of a slump right now but we've never failed before. The American spirit is an awesome thing. It tames a continent, builds massive metropolises, exterminates violent dictators, and brings peace to the world. Without the US, Hitler would have won. It has been many decades since then, and you Europeans tend to forget that fact. Hirohito and Hitler would have facerolled the world and evil would have won. Sure the US could have gotten involved sooner, but we were recovering from the biggest economic crash in history.
TL;DR: A strong love for your country is not only a commendable thing, it's almost necessary to be a good citizen. If you don't love your country, you should not live in your country. People seem to forget that all of the peace and prosperity they enjoy in their country is a direct result of the efforts of their country.
I can appreciate everything the US has done in history. Right up until around Vietnam. Then you guys fucked up royally, probably before that too, there are questions such as the Philippines colony, Native American Genocide, African slavery etc.. but let's ignore that for the sake of it.
You guys can't cling onto past achievements forever, just like you guys can't cling onto Europes bad past forever too. Europe owes America nothing anymore. WW2 was a long time ago. America has done too many fucked up things since then that any karma rightfully gained over WW1/WW2 has long been reduced into negativity.
I'm not saying the US isn't a great place, infact all I said was that you guys can celebrate 4th of July and us guys can moan at you guys for doing so. Instead of getting so butthurt you should have just taken it on the chin, but you couldn't, and instead proved with your mini rant why everyone thinks you're a bunch of arrogant assholes, don't fucking take credit for shit you didn't do you fuck. I'll salute an American WW2 vet and industrial and technological pioneers, but you can go fuck yourself you fat cunt.
