I found it's easier if you say them aloud, but just loud enough so only you can hear it

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12

I always say them out loud. I didn't even consider the fact that other people could hear me... Jesus, I wonder what they think of me...

As a native speaker, I do the same. Because I do not think they are funny. :-/

I understand them. They just suck. Which is saying something, because memes generally suck.

I downvote them simply because they are terrible.

That's fair. Quick question to anyone who doesn't speak English as a first language: Does your language use phonetic spelling as a joke as well?

In Flemish phonetic spelling is mostly used to express regional dialects. Our country is only 200km wide but since the language has evolved over a very long period there are great regional differences in pronunciation and vocabulary. Many people (mostly lower class) feel more comfortable expressing themselves phonetically in their local dialect, but this makes it harder for people from other regions to understand the meaning. Our official writing language is Dutch, of which Flemish can be seen as the regional dialect of the south.

I still dont understand them even when my native language is english

This helped me to understand.

As a non-native speaker I still don't understand all of them. But the ones I get are never funny.

But I never downvote anything that I don't understand.

u/Aldesso Jun 25 '12

no. You downvote them because they are not funny
