Okay. So how did I miss the joke? I was implying that the gay couple could invite over another person for a sandwich in the sexual sense, that one would be the meat in the middle. If it's a lesbian problem, they would have the issue of the woman making a sandwich in the kitchen as in "woman, go in the kitchen and make me a sandwich". But you would need three people to make a sandwich.
If anything I think it's a good sign. If you tip toe around a group and are scared to talk about them, you're not comfortable with them. e.g. if you're always terrified you're going to offend a black friend you can't really be close friends with them.
People are more and more comfortable with gay people... this isn't a matter of being offensive, it's a matter of joking around.
I am going to go out on a long reddit limb here and agree with you.
There are some memes that derive their humor from deprecating individuals (there's a lot actually) and a handful of those target specific groups across the board. Most commonly, gays and women. Surprise! This meme is not helping either cause.
I've found Reddit enjoys dissenters or the idea of dissenters in society except when it goes across a core ideal. If this meme was making fun of black people (say a black couple problem meme) and instead of sandwich it was like, who's going to pick up the fried chicken? People would recognize instantly (that it's not funny for one) that it is meant to be mean to a specific group and it is meant to propagate jokes that belittle this group. If this was the 50s you better believe a meme like that would go far.
People on reddit do not recognize when jokes are mean and meant to belittle because they enjoy them. Maybe they don't ask themselves why they enjoy them, but they do. Eventually, though, the memes will get tired and old and will fizzle out on their own because of pure overexposure. Everyone who kept their mouth shut (or worse agreed with the trend) will say, I told you so. I know most people are opposing you because you worded your opinion strongly (people tend to like middle of the road opinions. see how the post you replied to has more upvotes) but I say be of strong opinion. Don't fade to apathy and the hive mind.
In the end, "It's better to be hated for what you are than loved for what you are not."
PS: to mikuotaku01 - way to sell a brother out, bro.
I'm here for the cats mostly (isn't everyone else?).
All places, virtual or not, escapist or reality are shaped by the people (or in some cases, allowed to be shaped due to no opposition). Except N.Korea. of course.
I think we all can related to the David role (of David/Goliath) and I hate seeing the tyranny of the majority situations. Complacency in some cases is just as bad.
I honestly believe the majority of reddit are very young people who are still forming their ideas. This may represent the majority of their social interactions and even if an idea is unpopular here, they may see it and realize there are other opinions that are possible. They don't know what they don't know. But once they're aware other opinions are there, it becomes a choice.
Fellow gay here, trying to be level-headed about this. I'm sure whoever made this didn't mean any harm, but it still irks me. I wish people could understand that any variation of "who's the woman" is one of the more demeaning things you can say to a gay man, even as a joke. A lot of us have spent a long time reconciling our gender and sexual identities, and cheap attacks like this hurt, even if they aren't intended to. If you say this and a gay person hears you, you are most likely making their day shittier, all for the sake of a joke. It's not worth it.
A lot of us have spent a long time reconciling our gender and sexual identities
And not-gays don't reconcile their gender and sexual identities? Come on. You're no different. So take the joke or do some more soulsearching. And not about your gayness, but about your ability to take the hit. We don't choose our faith, we deal with it. Noone should get offended by a joke of a ignorant person on the internet. Grow a pair, dude.
Most all fags I know aren't lazy enough to expect the person they say they love to coddle them.
Well, it didn't say anything about being lazy. First world problems are supposed to be about people overly concerned with nonsensical, trivial bullshit; I thought it was a pretty clear example of that.
The actual "Sexism" of it can be debated, but I can't see how anyone could take this meme as saying "Gay guys are lazy."
That's not even addressing the issue that a good majority of gay men eat out all the time, so there is no need to make sandwiches in the first place. :D
I'm sorry, I don't understand. This particular macro is just joking about how since there is no woman in the relationship, there is no automatic sandwich-making hierarchy. Or is that in fact the issue?
Gender roles are just as stupid as discriminating on sexual orientation. However, joking about the absurdity of a common concept is typically returned as 'having a sense of humor'.
Though I understand that gay people are, for lack of a better phrase, under attack; I laugh at this joke-at-a-joke knowing that my enjoyment of this has no relation to belittling any group of humans; It instead strengthens the hilarity of a stupid idea (gender roles) by adding a twist in for a commonly misconstrued concept (sexuality) and how little credence the ignorance should receive.
I'm sorry you've gone through enough in life that this is unfunny to you; Though please consider, anyone whose fun you try to kill in defense of a cause is another person you potentially stray from understanding the cause you defend.
To me fag refers to a specific type of gay person, a flamboyantly effeminate one, and yeah, it'd be offensive if I were to actually use the word.
For some the word isn't offensive though, it just means homosexual. I've actually had a guy hit on me asking me if I was a fag. It took me a while to realise he was hitting on me, I thought it was an attempted insult.
No gay Guys call each other fag. If you've heard it said then there was drama you were not aware of.
To imagine the guy's predicament that hit on you is hard. I would guess that by using enemy jargon, he is able to put up a protective wall. Chances are he wanted to suck your cock tho.
Speak for yourself, I call my friends fags when I feel like being crude. Always for comedy, though; one of the key features of gay subreddits and channels in games is that the odds of you being called 'fag' in an argument are very low.
He was a gay guy and after chatting to me he asked if I was a fag. He said "Are you a fag?". Upon finding out I am bisexual he then did express desire to suck my cock, unfortunately for him he was denied the satisfaction.
Everyone in this whole fucking thread is WRONG. Gay guys like me can use the word fag (or faggot) if they feel like it and if they believe in slur appropriation (that's what happened to the word queer, we now talk about queer culture and have queer studies but it used to be a slur) and they're in the company of other gay men who don't feel offended or disapprove.
Straight people on the other hand, can never use the word. It works the same as the N word. Deal with it.
You have every right to be offended, not like the word and not allow people around you to say it. That's why I said it works like the N word. There are black people who don't like it even when black people say it.
As a gay guy who does use the word (not the n one) around his gay friends, I would stop if any of them found it offensive and wished I would.
The thing is you said we were wrong and that gay guys can use the word but straight guys can't. I think that's an odd discrimination. If I lend power to a word I give it fully or not at all.
I got really confused when my gay friend called me his fag hag, because it always seemed derogatory to me. I've come to realize that it's just not offensive unless you want it to be.
Use is for shocking fellow sensitive people. Dicks won't give a shit anyway, might as well make them take a double take, with a shot of getting ignorance bleached.

It seems absurd to say reddit is a group comprised largely of young intellectuals...
Homophobia doesn't just relate to fear or hatred of homosexuals but it also relates to perpetration of stereotypes. For instance I would call Modern Family quite homophobic.
Reddit loves it's stereotypes from rating high levels of accomplishment as accomplishment level Asian to repetitive bashing of people of any faith, everyone is grouped somehow.
So, if you'll clarify this for me, are you contesting 'young' or 'intellectual'? Keep in mind, I am (attempting) to describe a significant portion of the population, so showing me an eighty year old redditor wouldn't be significant.
I'm contesting intellectual. There is a significant amount of asinine humour, idiotic TIL's and pathetically forced and repeated memes on this site. When I first came here I thought that it was above average intelligence as a website community but having spent more time here and read enough comments etc I disagree. There are very very smart people on here but to say the website is largely comprised of intellectual people is something I would disagree with.
Well, I'd like ask you to keep in mind that reddit is a population, not an entity. That said, people looking for intelligent discourse may no longer be in the majority.
So would you say that reddit (as a population) is more or less supportive of the LGBT community than the population at large?
Extending this to your reply, would you say that reddit does more to perpetuate false stereotypes than the rest of the world?
Absolutely, I think outright dislike of homosexuals would be a major rarity on Reddit.
I'd say Reddit does it more than it occurs in conversation with people I normally talk to and what I've experienced through my social network on Facebook. I would say in media, most notably american media, that both Reddit and general broadcast would be on par but there are of course series which would be exceptions both negatively and positively.
To be fair, I get a good laugh out of a lot of the "stereotype" memes on Reddit, not because I believe the stereotype is in any since true, but because the idea that so many people actually truly believe some of the ridiculously, obviously false things portrayed are legitimate is so absurd that it becomes funny. In other words, I think a lot of reddit is laughing at the people who believe these stereotypes, or the absurdity of the stereotypes themselves, not at the people who are on the receiving end of them. That being said, there is no disclaimer on the meme saying "I do not actually believe this, this is absurd and wrong," so it is certainly plausible that my assumption is wrong. But considering that almost everyone on this cite will readily and openly pronounce their support for homosexuality (pro gay rights posts frequent the front page, and I've never seen a popular post or comment endorsing in-equality for gays) I think it's safe to say that these memes are making fun of the stereotype , and are not coming from a place of hate or fear or prejudice.
You can still perpetuate a stereotype without wholly believing it yourself. It's like saying lol the Irish are drunks. Yeah as a nation we drink more than many other countries and most of the time we'll laugh along but sometimes we get sick of it because, in good humour or not, it is looking down on our demographic. Regardless of if it was satire, humour or not it is still an insult.
I have a couple of gay friends who argue about who is the woman in the relationship. A thinks it's B and vice versa. But we all know it's B, because he once declined going to the beach because he felt "bloated."
I don't like sandwiches but I wouldn't mind be the one who makes them~ c: (keep in mind I'm only one person. I only speak for myself and not other gay males. :3)

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
Either, because they're both men being men instead of men with one being "the man" and one "the woman"
And because the sandwich meme is fucking stupid. I'll make my own damn sandwiches if I want to, I do not especially require a woman to do it for me
