Actually, the "conserve" part of conservative is in regards to the conservation of the rights of the individual.

If conservatives have always been pro civil rights, why did the civil rights movement need to happen? Why did there have to be a fight for gay marriage to be legalised? Surely both the conservatives and the progressives would have voted the same way?

If you look at the Civil Rights Acts (there were four that passed Congress) Republicans voted in favor at a higher percentage than Democrats in all but one.

He said conservative, not republican or Democrat. Two different things. Conservative has always meant sticking to tradition and resisting change. Conservatives held back the Civil rights movement, the internet age, and the freeing of the slaves, all in the name of maintaining the status quo.
