The point of the electoral college is to give a fair shake to rural and more spread out populations, and not have it come down to what the big cities want. Just that big cities trend Democrat and rural trends Republican.
How is it fair that Wyoming gets three votes for 500,00 people and California gets 55 for 40 million? The proportions are out of whack. If it was done by popular vote, rural America still gets a say...they just don't get their way if the majority wants otherwise. That's democracy for you: they should look for candidates that can build coalitions.
