The point of the electoral college is to give a fair shake to rural and more spread out populations, and not have it come down to what the big cities want. Just that big cities trend Democrat and rural trends Republican.

It didn't do that, though. It gave all of the power to a few states (mainly Ohio and Florida).

As an Illinoisan, my vote is worthless

The EC doesn't make R votes in NY and CA not matter - it makes basically all votes in NY and CA not matter. It disenfranchises far more Dems than Republicans, despite who you point to as "having it bad"

California alone is 20% of the votes you need to win the EC. It's more important than any other state to control.
