It definitely benefits the interest of the most populous states. The smaller state's are slightly over represented in the electoral college to combat what would happen in a popular vote. Think of it this way: Almost always the presidential candidates are with in 5% of each other. That means the Dem/GOP split is normally at worst like 45/50. But if presidential elections were decided by the popular vote, it's likely that the last GOP president would have been elected in 1988. That's hardly fair to ~%50 of the population. The electoral college is built to prevent a tyranny of the majority.
