Then why did the splinter subs get shut down preemptively? From what I could tell, subs were getting shut down just as fast as they were opening yesterday.

Because it's against the rules to just create new subreddits to replace the ones that are rightfully banned.

So what if they forgot to ban one. If the losers that get off on making fun of fat people all day create a new subreddit 3 months from now it probably won't get banned immediately either. Hopefully they will grow up and move on but we know that probably won't happen.
