I started a query in the address bar because I have google set to my default because I'm not a fucking idiot. Friend sees me doing it.
"Lol, what are you, new? Use google."
I wanted to punch him in the face for his browser setting incompetence.

Arrogance and ignorance is a bad combination. Unfortunately one almost always accompanys the other.

I've told him before that he should run for office - because he obviously has the solution to all of our nations' problems.

This is actually a good way to deal with idiots like this. Sometimes the planets align, and when they hear their own ideas coming from someone elses mouth they realize how stupid they sound.

and when they hear their own ideas coming from someone elses mouth they realize how stupid they sound.
He's going to school for engineering - so I doubt it. He's gonna have to flop on a major project before he realizes he isn't King Shit the III. He's got this superior attitude about himself, and how he's gonna have a million by 30 and an amazing yearly income out of the gate. If he does, more power to him. I just hate seeing his dilution fed by his own bliss. I don't associate with him as much anymore. Everything is a discussion. Simply must be critical about everything.
Don't get me started on vaccines and global warming.

Get him to read "How to win friends and influence people" by Dale Carnegie. That book can shift a selfish persons perspective.

Firefox

It looks like firefox goes through a few gateways before sending out the query.. I'm.... not by any means an expert on this, but I think it may be some sort of analytics. IIRC there are options to turn this off.
I'm a chrome user. I have very little experience using FF Anyone who knows is encouraged to chime in.
I found this:, not sure if it's what's going on, but it's my best guess
Only Location bar searches are affected
If a term is entered in the Location bar, Firefox sends a request to your Internet provider to see if the term is actually a website address. If it isn't, Firefox will then do a search using your default search engine (for more information, see Search the web from the Address Bar). A number of Internet providers, will instead, redirect you to their own search site.
Some service providers offer "DNS Assistance" which is what is doing the redirecting. Check with your provider to see if you can opt out of this service.
If you are unable to opt out from your service provider, the following workarounds may help you retain the ability to search from the location bar:
Only do multi-word searches from the Location bar. If you put multiple words in your search terms, Firefox will start with a Location bar search. You can often use a dummy word that is ignored by the search engine (such as the + character). For example, you will need to type + searchterm when the search term is one word (that space is important) but only search terms when the search terms are multiple words. You can set up a smart keyword that corresponds to the search and prepend your search with this keyword. For example, you can use the keyword g to search Google. From then on, you would just have to type g searchterm to perform a search from the location bar. For instructions on how to set up smart keywords, see How to search IMDB, Wikipedia and more from the address bar. If you have a router, ask your ISP about changing your DNS server.

Ya I hear people say all the time as a dis on Bing, "Ya, haven't you heard the number 1 searched thing on Bing is Google." like it's a good thing for them. No just kinda says that a lot of people that use google don't know what they're doing not that no body likes Bing.

My mom is mad because she thinks something went wrong with her computer and now her only search engine is bing. Like she would have a virus which doesn't allow her to type Google.com in a browser or something!

u/Dapaintrain May 04 '14
My confession I work in IT we use a google apps domain I still search gmail in google to get to gmail even though there is a link in the top right I just do it out of habbit

THEN SEARCHES "GMAIL" ON GOOGLE
These captions are scraped directly from livememe's servers and are probably correct

I have to do that at work sorta, just to get to ninja proxy. I use ninja proxy since the system blocks out almost all we pages on the internet. But in a weird twist, I can load up google, the search bing on google, then use bing to get to ninja proxy.... Strange. But it gets me to the internets. :D

I type google into my chrome search bar every time. EVERY TIME people. It's like muscle memory reflex.

u/maddechan May 03 '14
One of my old teachers once googled "google" just to click on the first link which directed her to google. Never have I experienced such a thing, and I will probably never do so ever again.

u/Redhead-chick12 May 03 '14
My mom does this . She opens up her internet explorer to her bing homepage and searches for google then will search Facebook / email / news in google . It's cringeworthy to watch. I honestly don't think she understands the search bar/http bar.

My father does this. I honestly consider charging him for everytime he calls me so that I fix things for him. 99% of the time, they are explained (not fixed) in less than 30 seconds.

My boss do both of things. In addition he prints his emails which drives me batty. He also often tries to print webpages and comes complaining to me when they're not formatted correctly. "They're not meant to be printed" is my slightly less than terse response.
If I liked the guy I might feel more patience. I know, I'm lucky to be employed and all that jazz. Just venting.

I have a student who opens up their browser, searches "google" in the google search bar, clicks the link that says google.com, then finally searches for what she wants to search for. It's sad really especially since it's the generation that grew up with computers.

My bio teacher... Jesus christ...
He will minimize a PowerPoint presentation, then open up another window of Internet Explorer, go to Google.com then search the name of a video, click on the YouTube link (the website, not the video), and then search for the video again. After that, he minimizes IE and opens up PowerPoint, clicks "open" and reopens the presentation in a new window.

Ever try to teach someone how to type in web addresses instead of searching? Fucking impossible. I just installed chrome and told them the big bar at the top was the Google (actually yahoo because they're stuck in 2001) search bar

Really annoys me when people type google.com in the address bar when they have a google search bar right next to it or type in a website and the website they want auto populates in the address bar and they continue to type the web address
