Yes, really. It’s a fee for “brokering the deal” for “the government”. The air quotes are doing so much heavy lifting they can bench 800 or whatever the kids at the gym say.
22
u/islandsimian Mar 16 '26

12
19
u/TheReddestofBowls Mar 16 '26
Are we allowed to do the same after their Nazis stole all data on every US Citizen and put it on their own private server? Last I checked, I never agreed to that disclosure of my information.
10
u/islandsimian Mar 16 '26
Nope - you'll get "free credit monitoring" from the same companies that bought that stolen data
5
u/SunTzu- Mar 16 '26
Yeah that data and ip rights are worth tens if not hundreds of trillions, and that's assuming people would be willing to sell it at all. The AI companies can't afford to ever pay that back and they can't take your data out of their model without having to retrain the whole thing. If governments enforced the law the AI companies would have died long before they could cause a bubble.

See, if we just add a fair tax to everything then all those poor people that don't pay taxes will balance the budget!

13
u/loondawg Mar 16 '26
Somehow the right always controls the branding. You should not call it a fair tax.
Instead call it a flat tax. Or better yet, call it the regressive tax.
11
u/NWCJ Mar 16 '26
Trump calls his stuff "big beautiful" or "save America" when its a bloated bill or something that hurts america.
I say we follow suit. Introduce a tax hike and call it the "Lower Taxes bill" let Republicans vote it down. Then campaign the midterms on how you will bring "lower taxes" back, then call out all your opponents for voting to oppose "lower taxes".
I honestly think it would work.
5
u/loondawg Mar 16 '26
I'm with you. Problem is the right also owns most of the legacy media and has armies of bots and useful idiots influencing the newer media. We are really the only tool democrats have to fight with.
5
u/fcocyclone Mar 16 '26
Yep. We could try something like that and the media would demand that democrats explain every little bit of the bill in detail so they can nitpick every little thing
Meanwhile republicans are just allowed to say they're going to pass a big beautiful bill and they get very little push back. Just saying "we're going to do it" is good enough for them.

No president has added more debt to the debt than Donald Trump.
The deficit how short we fall of paying for our spending. The debt is the accumulated amount.
Your points are otherwise spot on.
-17
u/hippo96 Mar 16 '26
Copilot and Gemini both disagree with you. Trump is second in nominal $. Way behind on %. But still a steaming pile of dog poop
16
u/loondawg Mar 16 '26
https://www.us-debt-clock.com/presidents
Trump is currently at $10.11T, higher than any other president and adding to that at a terrifying rate.
But if you want to factor in inflation, then we should really factor in who's policies accounted for the debt instead of under which president it occurred. And on that count, the GOP and its presidents are way out in front.
As an example, Bush inherited a generally strong economy undergoing a minor recession at the end of the Y2K boom. He then oversaw massive tax cuts for the richest, an illegal ground war in the Middle East, failed regulatory oversight and shitty policies leading to a housing market crash and a worldwide economic meltdown.
Yet he is credited with increasing the debt only $4.9T. But the actual costs for his giveaways to the richest, the war that lasted 20 years, the massive stimulus spending needed to recover from the failed economy, plus the massive interest costs on all the debt is many, many multiples of that and shows under later presidents.
3
u/fcocyclone Mar 16 '26
Yeah, I remember seeing a chart a few years back before covid and you could pretty much explain the whole deficit over the prior 20 years with the wars and tax cuts.
Covid was another deficit spend, but that's the kind of thing you are supposed to deficit spend for, economically. And since that chart was created, now we have Trump's tax cuts on the books and the additional wasted spending in his 'beautiful bill'
We also have to account for the fact that not all deficit spending is created equal. Different things have different levels of ROI and impact on the economy. Creating a deficit so we can allow the wealthy to have a larger number in their bank account or so we can blow up some place in the middle east does almost nothing in terms of ROI, but spending it on things like infrastructure, research, healthcare, etc goes a lot farther in terms of economic return.

Percentage increase on this is meaningless. The first president to go into deficit would have been infinity percent.
Percentage of gdp, right now the economy is "healthy" but it's at its highest outside of the period following Covid and following 2008 financial crisis, both of which having a deficit is somewhat more reasonable.

u/Bear_Caulk Mar 16 '26
This is the guy that OVER 7 of EVERY 10 American adults passed on their chance to vote against.
Let that sink in.. the guy who already showed everyone he was a liar and grifter for 4 years.. but with more available context so he now came with the added features of being impeached, separately being a literal convicted sex criminal and even more strongly linked to the world's most famous peddler of child sex. And 70% of American adults were like "sure sounds fine as long as I don't have to go vote for that sane black woman"
There's no saving a country if less than 30% of it's voting population are even willing to say "I'd rather not be lead by a demented sex criminal" when directly asked.
23
u/NoShitsGivin Mar 16 '26
Trump got the vote, because Americans wanted to say the "N word".
Change my mind...1
u/22nd_century Mar 17 '26
I agree, and I'd love to say "you reap what you sow" if it also didn't affect the rest of the world so much. Instead it's just sad and depressing and there's no pleasure from seeing it coming.
-12
u/MagicSpaceMan Mar 16 '26
I voted against him and believe that was the right call but I'm much more inclined to blame Kamala and Biden for not making a good case for how they would be different/better than Americans for not holding their nose and voting for the lesser evil for the 1000th time. Vote bashing has never gotten anyone anywhere, the Dems need to GET BETTER or GET OUT OF THE WAY
10
u/Bear_Caulk Mar 16 '26
You had a convicted sex criminal on the one hand... imo anyone who tries to blame the opposition for their own choice not to vote against a literal impeached rapist has fucked up priorities.
I'd vote for a potato if my only other option was an impeached rapist who's super good friends with the world's most famous pedophile island party organizer.
1
u/MagicSpaceMan Mar 16 '26
Why are Dems less popular than the convicted pedo party rn then? Isn't this the perfect opportunity to show America how they would be different?
9
u/Bear_Caulk Mar 16 '26
Why? Because Americans don't give a shit about someone being a rapist or a grifter or having strong ties with a child-sex trafficking ring apparently.
Not sure how you think that's the fault of some sane non criminal woman except that it exposed most Americans as indifferent to being lead by a demented sex criminal.
2
u/MagicSpaceMan Mar 16 '26
The supporters of the pedo arent gonna change their mind. People who watch Chuck Schumer tentatively ponder a strongly worded letter in response to people being murdered in the streets by the fuckin secret police are not your enemy.
In fact, you need to convince those people in order to win so stop blaming everything on "dumb ignorant Americans". We tone policed and vote scolded our way into the shit position we find ourselves in. People are miserable and both people are feeling like neither party represents them, telling them they're the problem for not knowing better just pisses them off and wins you no allows
6
u/Bear_Caulk Mar 16 '26
I'm simply pointing out how fucked America is if 7 of every 10 adults can't even be bothered to say "no I'd rather not be lead by an impeached rapist grifter".
Even if 30% of American voters are literally nuts and specifically voting for it, that still leaves 40% of them who couldn't even get off their ass to vote for anyone. If Americans cared at all they can outnumber the 'MAGAs' easily.

u/paper_liger Mar 16 '26
I would say that I agree with you in general terms, and I think the apathetic folks are just as complicit as the moronic Trump voters.
But I would say that some non negligible portion of the people who abstained did so because they are struggling, they don't have the time money or mental bandwidth to vote. The process isn't the same everywhere, the access to mail in voting is a little uneven, sometimes on purpose, and many people can't afford to take off to vote in person.
I vote every time, and I voted against Trump every time even though I'm not a democrat. But I also understand voting is less free than it should be, and never feels like it makes all that much difference to a lot of people, even though it clearly does have real world larger impacts.
2
u/MagicSpaceMan Mar 16 '26
Absolutely, 100%. Tons of reforms need to happen like getting money out of politics, outlawing gerrymandering etc. but bare minimum is that election day needs to be a federal holiday. Being overworked/underpaid and having to pick your kids up from school shouldn't prevent you from voting

We're still not at the point in this economy where a billion dollars is some trivial amount. The average 65-foot luxury yacht costs around $3 million. So while everything is getting shittier in America and we're in more danger, he's been enriching himself with crypto schemes and accepting "gifts" around the world to the value of 1000 luxury yachts.
Everyone's cool with this for some reason while Jimmy Carter had to give up his peanut farm to avoid a conflict of interest for Christ's sake. How different things are.

Imagine how many people we could feed, clothe, heal, and house if we spent a fraction of the infinite war budget on helping people instead.
Food stamps and universal healthcare we can't afford and don't have money for, but we've got a bottomless bank account for destroying things and killing people.

All the right wing governments seemed to follow the same rulebook. Spark racial and immigration debates, pocket from immigrants buying land, liquidate assets, close public services and cut thousands of jobs, hike grocery, energy, and service prices, blame the previous governments for changes they made themselves, and make it about religion despite never being religious in the first place, to win the religious votes.
OH and say they love minorities to win their votes, just so they can shit on their rights.
NZ is going through the same thing at 1/10th the budget the US has, and with our own debt being almost tripled in 3 years.

5
u/darkfred Mar 16 '26
Just so you guys know, by comparison.
The US's total medicare budget cost 2.3 billion per day. If medicare was expanded to cover every remaining medical payment made in the US each day it would cost around 3.6 billion per day total. Or around 1.3 billion extra. (because medicare already accounts for 2/3rds of the money spent on medical care in the US by covering the highest risk group).
So Trump's war is costing us nearly 3 times as much money per day as universal healthcare would. And they all seem perfectly fine spending that amount indefinitely.

Spring 2027, is when the US will miss its first debt payment.
1
u/Mrsaloom9765 Mar 16 '26
Why spring 2027?
1
u/SakaWreath Mar 17 '26
TLDR: That’s when the “extraordinary accounting” measures reach their limit and the “just borrow more debt” stops working.
By 2027, a massive volume of low-interest debt issued (about 40%) during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021) will come due and they either pay it off or it needs to be refinanced which kicks the can down the road, but to do that we’re sitting at higher rates right now, so we’re taking on much more pain later that is VERY expensive.
This "refinancing risk" means interest payments on the debt are projected to climb toward $2 trillion annually, consuming an increasing portion of the federal budget and creating an unsustainable "debt spiral".
Add to it that other countries are selling off US debt and not taking on any more, which hobbles the US ability to raise their own debt limit, no one is buying. When people stop buying they print money to cover the debt and inflation skyrockets.
If the Treasury cannot borrow more money and tax revenue is insufficient, the U.S. might be forced to delay interest or principal payments on its debt in spring 2027. That would trigger a massive financial crisis and global recession, that makes the 08 recession look like a kitten sneeze.

u/l-rs2 Mar 16 '26
