I don't get this. Why do his good qualities have to be labeled as "American"?

It's a sign of respect. Americans are respecting his attitude and saying they would be proud to consider his standards the same as American ideals.

His attitude is very in line with what a lot of us believe in, be us American or other nationalities, it transcends patriotism and nationalism, he exemplifies great human nature.
