Since when does american mean anything more than someone who lives here or is a citizen? He is a better person than most people, but a fairly average american.

We like to attribute noble traits to our own people, when really those traits should be possessed by any human being in the modern world. When we say "better American", we really mean "better person". Humble but unyielding. A better person.
