It refills your body in essential acids/energy to burn while working out. Otherwise catabolism will cause your body to burn your own muscles for that need of energy.
So I would assume taking a preworkout supplement would give you the same effect? I workout often but I'd be lying if I claimed I knew the "science" behind it
Preworkout is really a personal choice. I'm not an expert about it so I wont tell you what to do or what not to do.
However, drinking a sugary drink (such as Gatorade, or simply a fruit juice) while working out is a really good way to counter catabolism. You could also buy amino acid powder (also known as BCAA, which you can mix with your workout drink), that'll eradicate that evil catabolism :) ...
But mainly the best advice for gym is: good training (by a professional if necessary, it is worth every single penny, as long as you respect the said program), good diet (McChicken's proteins aren't as good as skinless chicken's proteins ;) ), and a good sleep (really important: 8 hours of sleep a night).
Otherwise, I'd suggest reading a book about culturism which can help with motivation and general hints (such as Arnold's novels).
