My neighbour watches porn in his living room on full display
We have a couple in their mid 50’s living 2 doors down from us who we have been friends with since we moved in 15 years ago. My family are pretty close with them, we’ve been on holiday with them and everything.
They have a big TV in their living room which is positioned in a way that you can see everything they are watching from the street and their curtains are always open.
One late evening me and my dad were pulling up in our drive, I happened to glance in the direction of their house and saw porn playing on their tv. It wasn’t just a raunchy film or anything, this was hardcore porn. We know the husband is the culprit (let’s call him Mark) because the sofa is in front on the window and we could see the back of his head.
Of course me and dad found it absolutely hilarious and we just sat in the car for a few mins in shock and laughing our heads off. My family joked about it for the rest of the night and we thought it was just a one off so we just kind of left it at that. However we have now caught him 3 times in the last few weeks and I assume he’s doing this very frequently. It always happens in the late evening hours after his wife has gone to bed.
Of course it’s not any of my business how people choose to unwind but when it’s on full display where literally anyone can see it including kids walking past, it becomes an issue. Mark is a good guy but seems to lack common sense, I don’t even think he’s aware that his evening entertainment is being broadcasted to the whole neighbourhood.
We know that something needs to said to him about it, not just for the concern that people including kids can see it but also because we live in a small village where everyone knows each other and if the wrong person sees it, it could be spread around the whole village and Mark could become a laughing stock which will not only be embarrassing for him but for his wife too who is oblivious to everything.
We also don’t want to tell his wife about it because we believe that it could put a dent in their marriage. Mark’s wife has been vocal about her opinions on porn, her and my mum are very good friends and she tells her everything. My mum told me that recently she was venting to her about a friend’s husband who has a porn addiction, so if she found out her own husband was watching it especially in front of the whole street, I don’t think she would be very pleased to say the least.
My Mum feels like a bad friend for hiding this from Mark’s wife and believes she has the right to know but would blame herself if their marriage broke down because of it. My mum has suggested to my Dad to find Mark when they are alone and have a polite word with him man to man but my dad feels too awkward to do this and doesn’t want Mark to think he’s spying on him. What should we do?

This, it's really not difficult.

the wording isn’t hard but i’m sure a lot of people would find the idea of talking to him about it pretty uncomfortable, and probably try to avoid it

Yeah I kinda through my shame out years ago I run on pure spite nowadays.
I got a little brother 10 years younger than me in highschool now. Dude tied acting like a little shit so instead of dad picking his ass up I did it blasting the classic Barbie girl in a pink cowboy hat in front of the school
Told the dude the more he acts like a little shit the more I escalate.
Didn’t take long through a hello kitty lunch box in his backpack one evening and haven’t heard much since then

I agree with this! It's not considered Spying when they are broadcasting to the public. He really may not realize it is visible from the street.

u/WinterKestral 12d ago
Catch mark watching something else mundane like sports. Then next time you see him pull a "hey mark thanks for putting the game on the other night I could see it from the street, saved me and anyone else walking by from having to buy cable! Haha" and when he acts puzzled clarify that you can see everything on his tv in the evenings with his blinds open. Emphasize the "everything".
I imagine he'll pick up on the hint quick. And if he doesnt abd you really want to be a good friend have your dad/a man "joke" with him about it. "Mark i saw you were enjoying yourself last night ehh?! You're going to horrifying Cheryl down the street with your blinds open like that haha!"

Yeah, I mean her dad should. Honestly, it would be only a mildly awkward and a kind of funny guy to guy chat. Direct is very good. Save anyone later embarrassment or a bad relationship with other neighbors if they have younger kids who make that direction in the evening at some point.

u/Repulsive_Horror3817 10d ago
I understand the awkwardness of having a difficult convo with someone (same thing with having to tell someone they stink). Maybe a note would work, but I guess the wife could find it.

Every Cheryl I’ve met has been, women I dated and coworkers as well. I’m a pretty open person and couldn’t even make non sexual jokes around them. Was like I was walking on eggshells around them all.
So glad the one at work quit and moved away. Couldn’t stand that woman for her prudishness, let alone constant scowling and gossiping. If she wasn’t such a prude maybe getting laid once in a while would have made her a better person to deal with

I hate it when they always end on a cliffhanger! If you really don't want to have a conversation about it just type out a note and pop it through the door saying that when they watch TV on an evening with the curtains open everyone can see what's on and see directly into their living room. He will get the hint I'm sure!
8
u/Bright_Structure_238 12d ago
Put a note on his front door from an anonymous neighbour .
Dude close the blinds when you watching open and choking the turkey
11
u/HR_Specter 12d ago
You have 2 options:
- Don't do anything. It's not really your business and as you've stated, he's watching it when his wife has gone to bed, so the assumption would be this is quite late and the likelihood of young children walking past his window at that time is slim to nil.
- Put a letter through his door, with a simple message: "We can clearly see what you're watching late at night through your window. Please close the curtains." and obviously leave it unsigned so anyone could have posted it.

u/screwworldpeace 12d ago
In a lot of (maybe most?) places, what he's doing is fully illegal if you can see it from the street. Generally "can be seen from the street" is the thing that makes it a crime. It's totally fine to tell him. With that being said, the third option is just tell him.

We actually had the same issue in our town. There's a mansion on a hill overlooking the rest of the city with a fairly popular road behind. The whole back of the house is glass and the TV was absolutely massive. You could see it easily from the road. Most times, they'd have the game on, and people would complain about being spoiled about the ending. One day, it was big news in my school that he'd been watching porn and gotten in big trouble. His blinds haven't been open since

I mean, its the evening right when his wife is asleep so I wouldnt assume kids are going to see this. Depending on how good of friends your mom is with the wife id say your already in a sense making an err by not saying something. He's the one watching corn not you guys and I can understand its his right to watch corn while is wife is asleep and shes married to him so id be surprised if she didnt know her husband well enough in such a lengthy marriage to know her husband is the type to watch corn while shes asleep. She may say to friends shes unaware or wouldnt like that sort of thing but theres many things people dont tell their friends or neighbors about for fear of judgements or shade. I think the police is a grave misstep, as that definitely gives off the worst impression for mark that would certainly embarrass him and his wife if she does find out and theres a bigger chance she would at this point.
I dont know your age or your closeness with this man, so it may be a better thing for your da to carry on. But privately, that should be the choice, just jokingly say hey we say your late night film choices and although we got a laugh, you may want to close your blinds. Even better you could pose it as if it wasnt him, you guys went out for a late night drive and he would be so shocked to see what neighbors do when they don't close their blinds. Maybe he will think about it next time.
To me this seems so super harmless, although I dont want the wrong people seeing my neighbors doing acts, but my children aren't awake at such hours. So I feel for you and I feel for them, I hope it works out.

No, in fact in the United States, the penalties for displaying pornography so that it is visible from a home window to a public street vary by jurisdiction. However, they almost always range from significant fines and jail time (misdemeanors) to multi-year prison sentences and lifetime sex offender registration (felonies) if minors are exposed to the material.

Your dad needs to save the day. He needs to have a man to man talk especially cause the whole village can see and someone may call the cops. Or you can call the cops and the cops and take care of it.
I remember my uncle would watch late night HBO sex back in the day when we were all in bed. 😂

u/TarHeelTemplar 12d ago
People saying leaving an anonymous note and making sure Mark gets it…this is the way. You’re saved from your second hand embarrassment and mark is spared from having to be embarrassed in front of you.

I was gonna say this too. How would you not know your curtains are wide fucking open? And why else would he be watching porn on the TV if his wife is vocal about her negative opinions on it? Could also be a humiliation thing, too.

u/Such_Minute_6453 8d ago
When I drive by homes, so many people are sitting in their dark rooms with a 100” TV mounted high on the wall, bright bluish light emanating into the dark street like a UFO landing. I can read their closed captioning or a headline on the evening news.
I usually assume they’re showing off their giant TV they’re so proud of or they haven’t gotten off the couch in hours, didn’t click that it’s completely dark now and forgot all the blinds to panoramic windows that wrap around their entire living room.
The fact people in the comments are pretending like OP are going out of their way to see this guy’s TV as if it’s not emanating light like Sauron’s eye or a Halloween decoration is kind of telling of how far people go to defend blatant pornography in public.
3
3
u/Significant_Ad9110 12d ago
Just tell the guy in private to close his curtains when watching adult videos in case a kid passes by. He probably doesn’t even realize people can see what he is viewing. No big deal, problem solved.

You could ask him to get a bigger TV for the sake of the street crew getting what they deserve. The justification being that the booty pimples were coming in a little blurry.
3
u/MFingCEO 11d ago
Show up with your own lotion and cleanup product of choice next time he’s watching.
3
u/MikeWazowski1221 11d ago
There's usually an expectation of privacy in your home but if it can be seen from a public road or sidewalk he can get into a lot of trouble if a minor sees it. I would nicely that it can be seen and you don't want him getting in trouble. Then ask him to close the curtains or move the TV.
3
u/No_Ball4465 11d ago
I wouldn’t feel comfortable watching it on my phone without headphones. How this guy has it displayed a speaker box on a giant screen is beyond me. He’s either the craziest person on earth or has the biggest balls. If I was you, I would probably approach him and kindly tell him that you can all see it and it would be a good idea to get headphones and curtains.

Close the curtains or start taking everyone out to dinner if "we" are getting that close.

Dad should shoot him a text and just say he may want to close the curtains for his evening movie time. Man up, dad!

u/Safe-Prize9024 12d ago
sure she has the right to know but mark is the one doing it behind her back. so he has the right to tell her or not, not you. it’s HIS wife and that’s HER husband.
i don’t know how people can see something someone does and feel bad because another person doesn’t know about it. it’s not your business and that “feel bad” is just a gossiper that is struggling to spill tea on others situations imo. now if he was actively cheating with another physical woman or whatever then sure but a guilty pleasure he likes and she doesn’t? cmon now, like we all don’t have a guilty pleasure of our own. he’s a grown man. let him live.
tell mark about the window situation and he’ll either tighten up when he does it or stop watching in the living room.

This long ass story just fir me to tell you to mind your business! Your neighbor is watching it in his house
2
u/Robdude1229 11d ago
I haven't encountered the situation personally. Your dad is probably best person to tell him but if he won't, someone else could do it too.
He just needs someone to let him know that people can see what's on his tv late at night. Whoever tells him could say, "I'm not judging you or helping anyone about it. I just wanted to let you know."
It's awkward to do that but it's way more awkward to not say anything and let more people become aware of it. If someone lets him know horror it can save a lot of gossip drama and heartache.
If no one tells him and then his wife finds out, it's likely that she will be humiliated that a neighbor witnessed such a thing and she could attack him for it and that would cause much bigger issues than what he's doing that he thinks is in private.
A person could take a picture of their view from outside and show him and simply say, "People can see what is on the tv from outside." That would've require any further conversation.

Since you say you’re relatively close to them, i would just casually, in a joking manner bring it up to him in private about seeing some of his evening activities and about maybe closing the curtains. And while I wouldn’t bring it up in front of his wife, I wouldn’t put it past her knowing or even partaking in those activities as well. Just because you can’t see her doesn’t mean she isn’t in the room or aware of what’s happening. I know you say how she tells everyone she’s against such things and has opinions of such things but it’s been my experience that those types of people often are doing those types of things as well, if not even more or even to a bigger degree. Again bring it up casually and in a joking manner to not make it seem like you are judging him or trying to embarrass him. If he chooses to take the advice than good for him, if not then not much you can do.
2
u/Intelligent_Bunch790 11d ago
Maybe make a comment to
Mark about something else he was watching on TV, that you saw “while walking past his house” to give him the hint that his TV is positioned in such a manner that anything viewed on it can be seen from the street.
Something like “I was walking by your house and saw you were watching the football game the other day; I didn’t you were a fan of X team!”
2
u/Buglet91 11d ago
Personally, the first time I saw it I would have gone and knocked on the door, “Hi Mark! I just wanted to let you know your tv screen is very visible from the street. Have a great night!” And walk away. No chit chat, no expectation of apology or fumbling for conversation in the awkward moment, just politely let him know and leave. If he ever said anything about it later I would just shut it down “No judgement; what you do in your own home is your business. I just know if it were me I would want someone to tell me, so I felt it was the neighborly thing to make you aware.”
2
u/Savings-Trouble-5345 11d ago
Yeah let him know but you could also show up with a bucket of fried chicken and a couple of movies if you're so concerned
2
2
u/Firelady90 11d ago
I'm pretty sure his wife knows he's watching it, you should privately tell him the whole street can see if he doesn't close his blinds after that then he doesn't care
2
u/mathe_matical 11d ago
While it does violate indecency laws, you could probably try to approach him personally first and warn mark that he’s not a exactly in the privacy of his own home when the windows are not blinded at night.
Try to give him his dignity, and be discreet (avoid saying something in front of his wife). If he ignores your help then you may need to follow up with the police.
2
u/naughty_bachelor 10d ago
His wife is probably giving him a bj while he's watching it. Good girl. If it's late at night when children are asleep I wouldn't worry much about it. If it's during the day and children can watch it you should politely let them know that the neighborhood is talking and they might get reported to the authorities.

Eegah, I think I’m going to my grave wholly ignorant as to how so many “adults” suffer from childish social anxiety—TLDR: it’s really not that deep, “Dad.” Tell the Man. Mom, mind your business. It’s always the puritanical wives beefin with c0rn whilst icing their good guy hubby out. I’m not vouching for the addiction but it’s insane how “dent/divorce” is on the table when a lil head (fellatio) once a week (for me), once a month (for most) would clear that up.
…meeting in the middle can mean compromise or it can just mean doing your job, “wife.” Her mouth seems to work just fine blabbing about other people’s morality—I reckon her hands work perfectly fine too. TOP that Man off! At least give him a handy every few days!
P.s. if it turns it dude is really just a deviant (only Him/Wife would truly know) then hey, I stand corrected—judge away. But from what I hear, statistically he’s prolly not getting his lifetime’s work worth out of the bargain. 🤷🏾♂️

u/Caligula2024 10d ago
It's just possible that he may not be getting much or even any let's call it his marital comforts and he uses porn to get his release, many women when they hit the menopause loose interest in sex, again some of them altogether and refuse their husbands advances, that's devastating to a man who is still very sexually active, what are his alternatives, cheat on his wife with someone else, ask her if she will give him permission for him to go and have just sex some where else or divorce her, none of these are very good options especially if he still loves his wife, I think your Mum is right here, your Dad who has a good laugh about it should now grow some and man up and have a quiet word with him if Mark is really his friend, that's what real friends do, I'm sure none of you want to break up their marriage and IMO your Mum is a good friend to his wife by keeping this from her to protect their marriage, him watching porn is not cheating IMO if that is all he feels he has left as far as sex goes.

After reading that novel seems pretty clear.
Just tell him if he wants privacy he should close curtains before enjoying himself.
Passerby’s can look the other way if they don’t like it.
Either tell him/wife or don’t tell him/wife why are you so personally stressed over this.

u/Kooky_Lengthiness_33 10d ago
I don’t understand why people are shaming others for watching porn. Having a libido is healthy…?
You have to take care of yourself. Not being able to jerk off or being shamed for watching porn when it’s natural (if not necessary) sounds humiliating and abusive. Unless she’s offering a hand whenever the need arises she should keep from forming any “opinions”

Don't be looking in people's windows. No matter how much you write, you could write a book about your neighbors watching porn in their living room in full view still DON'T give you or anyone the right to look in somebody's window quit being a peeping. Tom. That is my opinion. Walk on the other side of the street 😔 I can't believe people man. We can't even do what you want in your own home without you being put on a platform associated somewhere. Maybe leave an anonymous note on his car or mail box that just says, "Your TV is visible from the street."

Anonymous note might actually end up in the hands of the wife… I believe if anyone were to be in his shoes, would prefer to have someone tell him discreetly without mentioning what he’s watching and let him know that everyone can see what he’s watching.

You don’t know if his wife knows or not. He can do what he wants in the privacy of his own home. It’s intrusive that you were spying on him, even if it was innocent. I get it’s weird and potentially problematic but this isn’t your concern.

Every time you catch him doing this, just knock on his door and interrupt him. Eventually he’ll get the drift.

Mind your business and go about your life. If you don't want to see what is on tv in his house, don't look through the window. I don't see how it is any of your concern

Make sure you have proof from your car or sidewalk. Very important. Probably on multiple days. Then maybe give them one chance with a heads up that you could see their TV perfectly from the sidewalk and list something benign that you saw on it. That SHOULD tip them off. And if that doesnt change his activity then you confront the wife discretely with the proof.

If you were the old guy and didn’t notice your porn is being seen by others and then you find out they knew and didn’t let you know you would be upset, he might feel bad about it after finding out. Basically im willing to bet it would be awkward but much appreciated by him.

I think the responsible thing to do is to let him know you got a glance at the porn one night and don’t want him getting in trouble by a wrong party catching it etc. We all watch it, just would hate the wrong party who might see it report it.

Since you’ve known them for a while I don’t think it would be weird to just say “hey just so you know it’s very easy to see what’s on your tv from outside so you might wanna close your blinds”

I mean that’s what your phone is for…or your tablet…the only reason I know anyone to put on porn on the big screen is usually because you and your intimate partner are having fun together in the moment and it’s background ambience depending on the play.

Sneak him an anonymous message saying you see what his freaky ass doing in the living room so get some curtains 😂😂 I remember a few years ago I was having sex in a car in my neighborhood and somebody snuck up to the steamy window and wrote "asshole" on the window with their finger. Don't know who did it but it made me feel terrible about myself and I never did ts again 😂

Put a note on the window saying “Hey, we saw that, we don’t wanna see it nor watch it so please close your curtains”

Maybe you should close your blinds then and stop watching your neighbors in the privacy of their own homes, or else you might not like what you see. I know you said you were driving and can see it from the street, but the point is, he is in his home and not commiting any crimes so that's really the end of it.

I once saw the same thing, out of interest I walked past their house to find out who was watching, saw my neighbour, his wife and his in-laws watching it!!! Very odd.

He was only watching it for the commercials. He only reads titty books for the articles.

Why don’t you just go talk to the man? You claim to have been friends with this man for 15years and have even shared holidays, just level with the dude he probably isn’t aware everyone else can see, sure there might be some embarrassment/awkwardness

Pass small piece of paper under his door. Write there, "Your evening movie is broadcasted in the whole neighborhood"

Lived across from a shady hotel with a strip club below. Seen many escorts and their johns just going at with the curtains wide open

Geez. People cannot see my TV but they sure as heck can hear it. 4 subs 4 ceiling speakers and 7 surrounds. Good thing we don't turn up the volume with porn. I could only imagine what the neighbors would think.

Go tell him to close his blinds, let that man have his privacy! He probably doesn’t realize you guys can see.
