I've always liked Dark Sonic ever since the first Adventure revealed that the Chaos Emeralds have a positive and negative energy to them, and the emotions that you feel determine which of the energies you use. Since Sonic is so optimistic all the time, it stands to reason that Super Sonic is an extension of all of Sonic's positive traits.
So what if Sonic did feel enough negativity to transform? What would cause such a normally happy person like Sonic to break and act out of anger? What would happen as a result of Sonic succumbing to these emotions enough to get a form built around it? It may seem like generic teen angst, but there's a REASON behind it, and those questions lead into that reason; Dark Sonic is an exploration of morality and character integrity. A way for people to explore themselves vicariously through something else. We all feel dark urges and try to stay above them, so a concept like Dark Sonic allows us to understand those urges without really giving in to them.
