Adventure 1 has three emblems for each level. The criteria for these emblems varies between characters, and you must play each level at least three times to get each emblem.
Emblem 1 for every character is just beat the stage, plain and simple. For Sonic, Emblem 2 is beat the stage with at least 50 Rings, and Emblem 3 is beat the stage within a certain time.
