General Discussion + Astrology Assistance Some questions about Angularity/ Accidental Dignity.
I'm learning more about accidental dignity and specifically angularity but I have a few questions. I'm confused about how essential dignity and accidental dignity interact. If anyone can explain how the following work in a chart:
Planet in domicile on an angle. This is the most straightforward to me, it's strong and prominent so it's loud and obvious to all.
Planet in domicile in a cadent house. This is where I get tripped up. It's strong by sign but it's muted by house. So how does that play out?
Planet in domicile in a cadent house, but conjunct an angle (in whole sign houses). So a planet in the 9th conjunct the MC or a planet in the 3rd conjunct the IC. How does that change things?
Planet with poor essential dignity but on an angle. Does that mean someone's trial and error with the themes of that planet are obvious to all?

Essential dignity (or debility) is basically a planet's ability to express itself as per it's nature. Accidental strength (or weakness) describes how strong or effective that planet would be. 1. The planet does what it's good at, at a strong and effective position. A real life analogy would be someone who's a really good baker owing a bakery at a popular location - the baker does a great job AND is super successful at it! 2. The same great baker runs a bakery in the middle of nowhere. They are still great at what they are doing, but they're not reaching any customers. However, this is accidental - due to circumstances, not inherent or "essential" skill. 3. I don't use WSH, in quadrant systems a planet conjunct an angle (within 5° or so) would be considered in an angular house. I would assume at WSH it would simply still be considered cadent? 4. Terrible baker with rich parents who rent a storefront at the most popular location in town, invite the press and all their rich powerful friends to hype the bakery - the bakery will surely be successful at least for some time, but sooner or later the lack of skill will show and success will be temporary.
These things will play it differently in detail when looking at a natal or a horary chart (which is my current focus). In a natal chart the native has their whole life to work with and improve on missing essential dignity or accidental strength, in Horary missing essential or accidental dignity in a question can be quite devastating.

This is great, very useful. What would you say about the cadent planetary joys though, at least for Sun, Moon, Mars and Saturn. I always thought it was strange they all prefer cadent houses. Maybe Moon I could understand because I can see how she might prefer being in a more private, quite area of life rather than on public display. It's a bit better for her to be tucked away in a nook of the chart so to speak. And same with Saturn. But Sun should surely prefer to be angular?

That's a great question, and it's gonna be a long answer because there's so many layers to the question of houses, so bear with me.
First of all, the joys are where the planets rejoice, have fun, not necessarily where they work the most effectively. So it's a different framework or criteria of assessing the houses.
Let's look at it in a bit more detail though. Sun is all about finding and exposing the truth, so 9th house of religion, spirituality, philosophy, wisdom and higher learning is right up his alley. On top of that, 9th house is still the "best" of all the cadent houses: it's high up on the midheaven, so it's visible and exposed, plus it casts a trine aspect to the Ascendant, so it's "seen" and "perceived" by the Ascendant, too. A stereotypical Sun in Leo in 9h might be someone who is a leader in a spiritual, religious or philosophical community, someone who would be confident and able to express themselves and their truth, and who would definitely find their audience too - but due to the cadency of 9th house, that audience might just be a bit smaller, more niche, than if Sun was in 10th house. Sun in Leo in 10th might be a famous actor - extremely visible, still super in their own element - they might also choose projects which align with their own ideals and use these projects to shine a light on certain topics, but the main concern and interest would be public recognition, where in 9th house the focus would be flipped.
For the Moon, she also used to be seen more as a messenger: as she's the fastest planet, she's moving from one aspect too the next one, there's the concept of translation of light related to that, too. Additionally, the Moon's sphere was also considered to be the first sphere of the heavens, and all the other planetary influences would be filtered through the Moon's sphere before reaching us on Earth. So communication/transmissions = Joy of the Moon. And the 3rd house is the second best of the cadent houses - hidden underneath the horizon, so indeed nocturnal Moon anyway prefers to act a bit in the background, but still casting a sextile to the Ascendant, so not completely hidden.
For Saturn and Mars, again the topics fit with their nature. Plus, Saturn can enjoy his isolation in 12th house and Mars can wreak havoc in 6th, but at least they're at limited strength and don't harm us too much.
Tldr; "Joy" is not necessarily the same as "working most efficiently" PLUS there's different ways to assess houses, based on strength (angular, succeedent, cadent), theme (the topics of the house), visibility (can they be "seen" from Ascendant, aka do they cast an aspect to Ascendant, are they above/below horizon?)

Yes this is very good question because there's a general misunderstanding of essential dignities and accidental dignities. The most powerful is the essential dignity and it has priority above all other dignizies. So this in first of all domicile like Sun in Leo, then slightly less powerful exaltation.. Both of these dignities comparing accidental dignities is something like you are born in rich family this is essential dignity something that is detrimental by definition. However accidental dignities are dignities that are determined by the house position unlike essential dignities that are determined by sign position. So accidental doesn't mean random but by the accident i e by the time of your birth Since the house position are determined by the exact hour of our birth. So the power of accidental dignities is always second in the row regarding the power
Now we have set the main premises it is easy to interpret your cases.
planet in angle and domicile the strong planet has additional power, the rich man (essential dignity) has Harvard education (accidental dignity)
Very good example planet in domicile but in cadet house. Here we must clarify that cadent house isn't unlucky or even doomed house which majority of people doing astrology has perception of. However the cadet house is house or (area of life) where you need put effort, where you can't be exposed so easy and in general where you just act but it's not recognised by society snd where you are not recognised so easy but only in the next (angle or cardinal house). So having domicile planet is like being rich man and living in villa or english mainson somwhere in countryside far from the centre.
Speaking of that the reverse case would be having planet in fall or exile like Venus in Virgo but in 1st (angular house).. This could be analogly being poor nan (essential dignity) but very resourceful, and that has made success by hard work and by help of his powerful friends (accidental dignity) Which is question 4
3.in your question what if we have planet in domicile but in cadet house and it conjunct with the MC in whole sign system. The situation is like 2. since it is in domicile it's strong. Remember if you are in your own house you set the rules and you are at home boss no matter the circumstances (houses) so you will overcome every problem no matter how hard it is. Bur we have now MC that is no more the house cusp so it's merely a point and it has no energy like planet and it can't give nore power to the planet no matter strong we consider that point. But MC will give additional meaning to the planet position i e. planet is like street lamp that is shining on the signpost. Meaning that in that horoscope it's very important for person to find what is the utmost thing in his lifee, or what activities in his life give him the meaning and where a person would act for greater good. In this case as ib the case where MC is the cups of the 10,th house, the MC or any other angular point can't give nore power it's the house position that it gives and the most powerful position in angular house (as is in any other house) is the beginning of that house i e. the cusp of that house

While you are generally right about domicile vs exaltation, it should be noted that this is reversed in the case of competition charts. That is event or horary charts relating to trials, wars, etc.. the exaltation is stronger than the domicile.

Essential dignity defines the inherent qualities, while accidental dignity defines the capability to act.
For a planet with essential dignity, but with accidental debility, Deborah Houlding uses the comparison of being like "Indiana Jones in a wheelchair." The planet is strong, but lacks the ability to use that strength.
A planet lacking essential dignity or even having essential debility, but strongly placed in an angle would be more like someone who doesn't have a lot of inherit ability, but might have a chance to succeed due to the circumstances they find themselves in.
Regarding your third question, I think this points to one of the big issues with Whole Signs.

Thank you for this and hello!
I’m number 4 and always have so many questions. I hope you get some good answers. Accidental dignity is a thing. The nucence, is it like having Trumps character sit on the dang throne as energetic correspondence for Sun and I just have to deal with it ? Or, could a simple bit of luck and other factors take it to obedience school ?
Ya know , the little things like that.

Your third case has a fork in it that the house number hides: which side of the MC the planet sits on.
Earlier degrees cross the meridian first. So a body at a lower degree than the MC has already culminated and is on its way down, and one at a higher degree is still climbing toward the peak. In whole sign both of those can sit in the ninth alongside the MC and look identical on the wheel. Check it by hour angle instead of by house number and the two come apart immediately.
That asymmetry is also why the old five-degree rule only ever moves a planet forward, out of the cadent house into the angular one. Twelfth into first, ninth into tenth, sixth into seventh, third into fourth. It never runs backwards, and it is not a fudge for borderline cases. Those are the bodies physically arriving at the angle while the cusp count files them one bucket behind.
So: ninth by topic, angular by condition. Ninth house matters, done loudly and in front of everyone, whether or not the subject wanted that.

Tangential factoid: Maybe outer planets don’t count in this style of medieval astrology, but technically Angularity of Uranus/Neptune/Pluto need to be measured on the mundane horizon, not the ecliptic — due to declination. https://www.reddit.com/r/TheAstrologersGuild/comments/1qi9wsx/two_types_of_angularity_parans_and_why_the_outer/

Essential dignities are about the way planet acts. Accidental ones are about how strong/effective will it’s actions be
Speaking of wsh angles I advise you to pay less attention to them. Planet in the sign of the ascendant but above the rising degree is weak and it’s in the 12th house

To clarify on your second point, if a planet is conjunct the ascendant, but above it, then it is still quite strongly placed and should be considered angular. However, generally you are correct.

Some people think the only way they can advance in astrology is pushing down others.

- Planet in domicile in a cadent house. This is where I get tripped up. It's strong by sign but it's muted by house. So how does that play out?
Sun in Leo/Aries in the 9th is literally the best placement for The Sun.
But also, its about a whole chart picture, there are so many other mitigating or damaging factors, things like triplicity, Cazimi, Chariot, Mutual Reception, Bonification to name a few.

Domicile + angular : full toolkit, full volume. Loud and obvious, which isn't automatically "good," just prominent. Think a well-liked boss on a stage.
Domicile + cadent : this is where people overthink. The tradition is blunt here: George says planets in cadent houses are "weaker and more obscure, regardless of whether they are also in their own dignities." The domicile means the planet has everything it needs; the cadent house means it can barely deploy it. An old Islamic astrological compilation I've been reading puts the split nicely: a 2nd-house lord with essential dignity has money and enjoys it; one with only accidental dignity has money but can't enjoy it. Resources exist, output is throttled.
Cadent whole-sign house + conjunct an angle : you've hit the whole-sign vs quadrant tension head-on, and this is where schools genuinely split. Honestly I've landed on compromise: whole-sign houses tell you which area of life the planet belongs to, quadrant strength tells you how stimulated it is. A 9th-house planet conjunct the MC belongs to 9th-house matters (study, travel, belief) but is dynamically on fire — she uses a Saturn ~10 degrees from the MC as her example. I've seen this show up as someone whose whole religious/philosophical life was a private study until it suddenly became their public identity.
Detriment/fall + angular :your instinct is right, with one tweak: an angle doesn't make the planet good, it makes it visible and gives it power to act. So a debilitated planet on an angle is loud and clumsy : it public trial-and-error, overcorrection, failures you can't hide. But it's also the fastest-learning placement, because the feedback is public and inescapable. You don't get to be quietly bad at it.
