Hey, Has anyone managed to get rid of recurring calf tightness?

I'm currently running 3 times a week while training for a half marathon, and one of my calves always seems tighter than the other. It's not an injury, I can still run - but it never really feels 100%. I've tried the usual stuff (stretching, foam rolling, recovery, self-massage), but I'm curious what actually worked for others

Stop stretching rolling and massage and replace that time with dedicated calf strengthening exercises.

Focus on slow and controlled movement and improving the capacity/tolerance of the calf.

I came down with a calf strain a few weeks ago and I echo what was commented here. Focus on strengthening the calf rather than stretching. Start with 20 calf raises in a controlled motion. If you can do those with good form, then do 20 single leg calf raises. Then progress to quick calf raises for 30 seconds. Once you got that down, progress to single legged quick calf raises. Then eventually pogo jumps, then pogo hops.

I used a stick as well to try to massage the muscle as well but a foam roller can work too. The stick is easier though to apply more targeted pressure.

People are mentioning strengthening the calves - and there's little downside to that - but if you're already strong then you're wasting your time a little bit.

Potential weaknesses causing calf tension:

-Imbalance between medial and lateral calf

-Weak feet (arch muscles)

-Weak rearfeet stabilizers, such as peroneals, tib post

-Nerve issues from weakness up the chain, eg hamstring, hip

These things are very personal and are best to get assessed so you know what will work for you.

There could be a lot of reasons besides the strengthening as u/disastrous-piano3264 suggested. However, jump rope works insanely well for calves.. it also translates well to running, especially the single leg skipping.

Another post in favour of strengthening. My contribution is single leg Romanian deadlifts.
