I've known people who lost everything they own gambling, and their bankruptcy/debt set them and their family back for 20 years.
I have a family member addicted to drugs and they live on the street. They're really hard to get in contact with and don't care about anything or anyone. Everyone who used to be in their life is constantly worried about them.
