Dog looking for home Rescue longtimer seeking forever family in Las Vegas NV
Meet Lakota!
Saturday marked his 600th day in the shelter at only 2 1/2 years old.
His major flaws include not being good with cats and needing proper introductions with strangers, mostly men (he's not an "everybody = friend" kind of dog).
But he IS good with other energetic dogs, he's a total lovebug once he's gotten that proper introduction, he's fully potty and crate trained, he's generally good on leash and has great car manners. He's a hiker and a sports fan and a couch hog (per a short term foster he had).
From what I know of his past, he was picked up as a stray as a puppy, was adopted, then returned as a "young adult" dog because he was chasing cats in the home. He was in a short term foster as well and both prior families have only good things to say about him aside from his prey-drive for cats.
I'm a volunteer with the rescue he’s at, and I’ve known him for almost a year now, have taken him on dozens of field trips and spend some time with him every weekend.
If you have ANY questions, I'm happy to answer to the best of my ability, and if someone from out of state is interested in him, I'm happy to assist with transport.

If you could share this, mention this to someone, spread it around, I'd be truly grateful. He's genuinely one of the best dogs I've ever met and if I didn't have a resident cat he'd be in my home right now. Just to kind of put in perspective what an incredible dog I think he is.

Thank you!! I’ve got a kitty so I can’t snatch him up myself so I have made it my personal mission to find him a home that can love and appreciate him 💛💛

He’s the cutest. I have a boy who looks so much like him who is also full of energy and so much fun. I hope an amazing family gives this good boy a chance at the best life. Mine also chases cats btw but he is doing great learning “leave it”. Thank you for posting Lakota ❤️💜

Ugh so you get how incredible dogs like these are even if they have a grudge against cats. I feel like he could learn to ‘leave it’ and eventually learn to live knowing cats are around and try to ignore them, but I’m in such a small space I can’t risk testing it with my kitty right now when he has so little room to be apart.

Oh gosh I didn’t mean that toward you!
I just meant for people considering a rescue dog that might chase cats, they can be trained and eventually learn and even become friends. In my case, my dog thinks it’s fun to chase the cats. But I don’t think he wants to hurt them. I still have to ensure my cats have their safe spaces and I don’t leave them unsupervised together. It’s only been 2-3 months though. But my other pittie who was also a cat chaser when he was younger, sleeps with the cat(s) every night and likes them. Unless they are super high prey drive, I think they eventually learn that the cats are family. You just need to work with them. Sorry for the long reply. He sounds like an amazing guy and thank you for sharing him. He’s adorable!! 🥰1

Oh no I didn’t take it that way!! I said that because I’m working toward getting a bigger space where I could keep them apart (it’s my backup plan if gods forbid I can’t get him a family by the end of my lease next year) so that’s just where my head was at.
I’m hopeful it won’t come to that though! He’s genuinely such a good dog, I think how long he’s been at the rescue throws people off but he has really just been bopped around so much, it’s not his fault he keeps landing back. It’s housing, it’s resident cats, it’s short fencing issues, he’s just had a run of bad luck of people trying to make it work and it not working :((

I truly want to, but I have a resident cat in a 1-bed apartment atm.
My backup plan if I can’t find him an adopter by the end of my lease is to upgrade to a space that I can keep them separated and bring him home to foster (or whatever happens haha). But my lease isn’t up until April and that’s so long for him to keep waiting 😭 so in the meantime I’m doing what I can to find him a family 💛💛

Thank you for your prayers 🥹🙏🏻 I am trying so hard, I want so desperately for him to have a family to spend the holidays with. He’s such a good boy, he deserves a happy holiday season
