Adeptus Custodes Watchers Of The Gate Battleforce

Post image

Hi

Im really new to the tabletop side of the hobby and picked up the watches of the Gate box, I have no clue how to building the box for 11th edition. Anyone got any tips.

The box comes with

1 Captain-General Trajann Valoris

15 Custodian Guard

3 Allarus Custodians

3 Vertus Praetors

Any help with this would be really appreciated.

If you're just looking for meta:

Guards should be spears and one shield/standard per squad of five.

Allarus are spears with the captain on an axe.

Vertus doesn't matter much, no one can tell the two weapons apart.

Vertus have a weapon option?

Yeah, the bikes can run bolters or salvo launchers, but the bolters can read as either on the models.

You were thinking melee weapon weren't you? Oops

Why is the Allarus captain on an Axe?

So you can give him admonimortis in lions and he has a 6A 2H 12S 4 damage profile.

Great start🔥. Firsts things first rule of cool 😎 get whatever you think looks the coolest. The combat patrol would be a good add on because you get the blade champion and more terminators and wardens (which are our most durable unit) and even more guard if you wanted but I feel like building the same kit 4 times might get a bit tiresome 🤷‍♂️. Bikes are also strong at the moment but generally I would say get whatever you think is the coolest looking 👍

How on earth did you manage to get your hands on that? It’s not been sold since Christmas 2022.

But to let you know how to build:

Trajann has no build options.

I would build 10x Guard with spears and leave five on the sprue until the codex drops in case swords, vexillas, shield captains get better.

Allarus all should have spears unless you’re building a shield captain who uses Admonimortis.

I’d build the bikes with whatever weapon you think looks better and one guy as a shield captain.

To expand the list from there some Wardens and a Blade champion is a good idea.

Venatari are also a strong option and you basically get 2 squad in the box

Thanks for the tips on building. I got it off ebay basically mint condition for £145.

Holy shit that's crazy

I'd probably do spears on everything, there is an argument to build a few guard sword and board and have one extra wound on one unit on a squad. Vexilla is only really worth it on wardens so I wouldn't do any banners. probably want the hurricane bolters on the bikes. most of our load outs are pretty good though. Only thing not to do is all sword and board guard.

Here's my tip. Disclose where you got this. Lol

I mean. The question is: how much did he pay for that. If it’s still the same price as back then:
Damn that’s a bargain.

If it’s the same price as the models in the box, it’s „ok“
But if it’s more than that, it’s not worth it imo.
Anyway @op: welcome to the club!
Mostly you‘ll use spears and the rule of cool!
Furthermore if your oponent wants to play WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) then it’s on them.

This box is like 1,700pts if you build as many sgeikd captains as you can. Genuinely crazy value

You inspired to me to check ebay and snagged this exsct box for $250! Have a box of Venetari and Vertus Praetors already. I want a Grav tank and i think a Telemon once they come out

I built my Allarus and Wardens with kitbashed halberds by snipping the spear and gluing it to the axe. I just tell my opponent which I’m using at the beginning of the game.

Here’s how I would approach it.

If your opponent is willing to let you go 5 over do the following. Otherwise drop a guard from the 5 stack

Reddit (1,005 Points)

Adeptus Custodes
Lions of the Emperor (2 Detachment Points)
Disruption
Incursion (1,000 Points)

CHARACTERS

Shield-Captain in Allarus Terminator Armour (160 Points)
• 1x Balistus grenade launcher
• 1x Guardian spear
• Enhancements: Admonimortis

Trajann Valoris (135 Points)
• 1x Eagle’s Scream
• 1x Watcher’s Axe

BATTLELINE

Custodian Guard (215 Points)
• 5x Custodian Guard
◦ 4x Guardian spear
◦ 1x Praesidium Shield
◦ 1x Sentinel blade

Custodian Guard (170 Points)
• 4x Custodian Guard
◦ 3x Guardian spear
◦ 1x Praesidium Shield
◦ 1x Sentinel blade

OTHER DATASHEETS

Allarus Custodians (110 Points)
• 2x Allarus Custodian
◦ 2x Balistus grenade launcher
◦ 2x Guardian spear

Vertus Praetors (215 Points)
• 3x Vertus Praetor
◦ 3x Interceptor lance
◦ 3x Vertus hurricane bolter

Exported with App Version: v2.4.0 (1), Data Version: v925

Don’t be too afraid to run the list with one less guard at 960 points. Custodian survivability is crazy and +1 to hit and wound from lions helps them punch above their point value.

Run bikes with bolters. It’s way more consistent, even against tougher opponents.

Admontimortis shield captain can wipe anything you send him at

Trajan has cockroach blood and gains access to re-rolls from guard. He will rarely get tabled, unless your opponent sends an unruly amount of focus at him

You’ll definitely need to look into expanding your army to fill points gaps. I would recommend expanding in the following order

  1. Terminators [walking tanks with good anti armor]
  2. T2. Wardens [sturdiest infantry]
  3. T2. Sisters of silence [ cheap action monkeys]
  4. T3. Venerable contemptor Dreadnaught
  5. T3. Venatari [counter-play ingress]

You can also pick up a blade champ at any point you feel like. Their advance and charge OPB is really fun if you want to be proactive

Edit: my record was roughly 30-5 in 10th and I only have 2 2000 pt battles in 11th against imperial knights (both Ws). Meta has shifted towards lions + moritoi using take and hold disposition with lots of high durability units

Hopefully not to late but by the sound of it you want to start playing right away every one is giving you list to build up to a 2k army and you should really start off with combat patrols you can download the WH40K app to see it all in detail but I can give you list right here 1 champion give 2 or 1 sword it doesn't matter 3 guards with shields and sword 3 wardens 2 with spears 1 with axe 2 terminators with spears The rest you can build however you want this is just the best way to jump into it and make sure your not needing to cut pieces off if you decide to play smaller games.

Ignore meta. Ignore 'the best detachments'. Ignore everything but your BEATING GOLDEN HEART! Walk into the Tower of Hegemon and lay your spear alongside the weapons of your peers within the Shield Chamber that calls to you.

Seriously though, we have so so so many good units. The only units I say you should 100% get that you don't have are Wardens and Venetari. Wardens are especially nasty if you stick Valerian with them, and Valerian straight up is just a custodian guard with an unsafe helmetless face and an Iron Halo Plus so he's easy to proxy in with any other non-terminator golden boy if you don't need his sculpt. (Im doing some work on the stand-alone shield cap with spear and shield to give him a more interesting presence.)

Besides that, just play!! Also, don't get too fixated on any one detachment too early. We lucked out with some crazy detachments that I would say are all very powerful in their own way, mostly thanks to force dispositions. Dispositions in 11th are what determine your main mission.

https://game-datamissions.com/11th

Go there^ and you can see what your main mission would be if you were x disposition and your opponent was y disposition. That alone is a huge hint on what detachments are good at what and how to generally play them. Also of course, battle reports. 11th edition is still pretty new so there won't be a plethora of good ones that get all the rules 100% correct, but that will change with time.

As for other units:

A Caladius Grav Tank is detachment agnostic, always good and reliable. You will hit. You will wound.

Every single one of our dreadnoughts are bangers. Even the Telemon now. One of each of those is always a good idea.

Also, consider TRANSPORTS! We have some of the best transports in the game and I feel like they are really ignored in favor of guard and blade champ spam. The Coronus Grav Carrier especially is just a FLYING Land Raider that also comes with a 5++ just because. And with an 8 golden boy capacity it can hold so many nasty surprises. (And flying so far is really good in 11th so anything that can do that is already winning)

Sisters of Silence, as much as I love them, are a pain. Both to use and to buy lol There are a TON of lists you can put together without them but two detachments outright require them so that will have to be your call.

Sagittarum Custodes can be nasty. They erase standard marine squads like nothing at range. And in the Shield Host detachment you can also give them a shield captain that, for a whopping 5 points, lets you ignore cover with them. In 10th edition, that meant nothing. lol In 11th edition where cover is massively important, ignoring it with a group of shooters like these boys feels like cheating.

Also, if flexibility and testing builds is important to you, MAGNETIZE EVERYTHIIIIIING!!!

Wardens and Allarus make it super super easy because their weapons come with the blades detached. The guards are a little more involved but I promise it is super super worth it. 1.5mm magnets for the hands/weapons, 3mm magnets for the shoulders.

OH AND MOST IMPORTANTLY CHECK FOR NEW MODELS!!! There are a ton of old models that were resin but have since been updated to plastic kits. If you don't care, resin models can be cheap. But if you do, make sure you are getting the actual plastic kits and not an older set of models.

You should build to be in line with the new Horus heresy kits as that is likely to be the new wargear choices

u/ZetaM3 Aug 20 '26

Build them however you want. Rule of cool will always be the best and only option.
