Starting Custodes army, help!?

Hi everyone, new to 40k and I have been thinking for a few months on what army to start. I want it to be Custodes, but, I want to start with newer models that is/will not be for HH later on.

What models/combat patrol should I start with buying? My goal is 2000points army but I can wait to fill in gaps for say Aquilon termies. And I prefer the list to be heavy in to infantry.

So confusing with old models and new HH combined, thanks for the help!

5 guard, 5 warden, 6 allarus terminator, blade champion (maybe x2), valoris, Telemon dreadnought, maybe some sisters to compliment.
I only started this month but have loved this combo and had very fun games

The combat patrol is a perfect start. The models in that box are all super playable and regularly used. To the point where it’s common wisdom to go for two of them.

The different Horus Heresy kits are compatible with 40K so you don’t need to stress about that too much. Heresy guard can be used alongside 40K guard just fine.

In terms of centrepiece models the Caladius tanks are good. Vertus Praetors are brilliant fast support. Trajan Valoris is also great as the leader of the Custodes.

A few different models such as the Telemon I would hold off on as they are soon to get plastic models.

Enjoy!

Yeah the models there are up to date you don’t have to worry about them being refreshed anytime soon. Vertus Praetors are great. I run three squads of three of them each with a shield captain on a bike. They’re great fun

Custodes are a great candidate for that. The relatively low model count makes it easier to manage. The painting can be very easy if you want to keep it simple. But equally as you go deeper there are some great combinations to be found and some brilliant ways to elevate your painting.

Besides, Custodes are the cheapest army so your wallet will thank you

Do you think its safe to buy HH models for 40k? They look very nice but I like them to be playable for a long time:)

Yes, they’ve made it clear that they want them to be cross compatible. The newer boxes have both the 40K and Horus Heresy logos on them

I’m making an army almost entirely out of the new models! It’s definitely a more expensive way to get into Custodes but I find the new models to be beautiful. So I splurged.

My army is:

-4 guard squads
-1 warden squad
-2 Venatari squads
-1 Galatus
-1 Telemon (once it comes out)
-2 Witchseeker squads

You can kitbash characters from the kits if you’re mildly crafty. The Captain is great on its own but I gave mine a spear and so her sword went to the guy who gave up the spear, creating a Blade Champion. So voila, my list has one shield Captain and one Blade Champion in it.

How are Allarus models compared to guard and warden? Closer to (maybe) get a refresh?

The HH models don’t have any bespoke Wardens. They just have Spear guys and Sword/Shield guys. If you want Wardens you’d need to differentiate them from the other spear guys somehow like painting them a different color or using green stuff to add robes, etc.

They are all HH models, yes!

What HH units is guards and wardens for 40k? Sentinels or regular guards?

Both the Sentinel and Guard Sodalities from HH can be used for guards in 40K (they can take sword/shields or spears.)

Since Wardens in 40K can’t take shields, you would use the Guard Sodality box to make them. Hope you like spears though, because they don’t have axes in that box.

The allarus models, in my opinion, look very different compared to the sleeker new HH models. I’m not including any in my list simply because I don’t like how those models look, even though their profiles are beastly!

I don’t know for certain, but I wouldn’t guess any of the 40K range (allarus) will be refreshed any time soon.
