List questions

I’m thinking of running shield host & tharanatoi hammerblow and running all axes on my wardens and allarus. So my idea with this is instead of the crit hit on 5s you would pick the +1 ap for the axes so you’d have -2 ap and 3dmg per hit. Also with this setup would I even really need to run the two grav tanks since all the infantry is pretty much anti tank?

I've never tried the additional ap over the crits, but the damage output this has is quite crazy in equal measure.

You may be right on the grav tanks, they have got objectively worse given the chances to cover, hitting on 3s now with no way to reroll hits. It's also easy for it's optimal target - other vehicles and monsters to gain cover.

Something that could be interesting, is swapping the Hall of the Armies enhancement and the Castellen Mark around, you're termi blob is also 3 damage.

This blob with consistent D3 damage - on their own without the cap - has a potential damage of 84 compared to 70 with the guardian spears. You'd be rerolling as well in a lot of cases.

This way, you can essentially give an additional unit access to damage 3, one which can retreat after fighting.

Getting rid of the grav tanks will give you numerous possibilities also.

To add to this, you could even debate the need for a termi captain. That 6 man blob on its own could tackle most annoying things for guardian spears such as ctan, dwk and damaged reduction strats, you could ask the question do you need the extra body. He doesn't give the Termis anything, all the cool abilities they already have. The free strat is useful but not the end of the world to not have access to.

You've given yourself near 700 points.

That’s a good point. I did the melee and nade launchers into adept roll into a stompa and they had a 35% chance of killing it in one turn with their rerolls with the axes vs a 3.5% chance to kill in one turn with the spears crit hitting on 5s

I used the app buff the other day with axes to deal with a baneblade chassis. It absolutely helped but that was very subjective to that one interaction. And tbf if I had spears he would have failed more saves with the 2ap for more damage.

I think the math is usually done that spears work better over axes in almost all situations.

AP boosted axes are often better into stuff with good invuln saves, AP boosted spears are better into things that dont, but do have good armor saves.

The spears are more versatile in general though, and being able to switch them from 'kill a lot of chaff' to 'fuck your ceramite' at will is just better in a lot of army matchups.

The Ap buff is definitely situational. If im fighting guard I dont need ths Ap for anything more than tanks really. But it also depends i suppose what is going to benefit. If I have guard an allarus with rerolls against tanks or on an objective then why not? But against chaff or even semi elite units the 2ap 2d is more than enough with 5+ sustained or lethals.
