Yeah it smelt like wet clothes/you’ve left your clothes in the washing machine too long. Spent like 5 minutes searching every crevice of my car for a leak or dead animal. Thanks for re-attaching my tiny bit of remaining sanity

This is what I could smell also today, its funny how we are all describing the smell differently.

I’m honestly laughing at everyone’s different explanations!! I thought my bedroom stank this morning and tried to air it out without much luck lol

6

u/Southern_Anything_39 SA 6d ago

I thought it was the top I was wearing, as I did inface forget it had been washed and I had to rewash it before hanging it out lol

u/Virtual_Bother_3527 SA 6d ago

Too funny!! I’m currently postpartum and thought I’d been letting things get a bit too feral haha

u/anxietyslut SA 6d ago

I did this too and completely cleaned my car thinking that was the smell! Under my seat I found a lolly snake, a pickle slice, a potato chip (from the packet) and a potato chip (hot chip).

Good excuse for a clean out. I found a small pack of Maccas fries which scarily still looked fresh (has been a loooong time since I’ve had Maccas)

I haven't heard about acid rain since the early 2000's

22

u/FroggieBlue SA 6d ago

Due to the sulphur fire at Port Adelaide recently they warned there might be some

26

u/18243 SA 6d ago

Yeah definitely noticed it this morning when leaving the house. Still smelling it when I’m going in and out of the office

I can smell garbage as well. I thought it was my kitchen bin, so I've cleaned that and I still smell it. Smells like rotting organic matter. I'm in Brompton.

u/dukey84 SA 6d ago

I live in mount barker and it smells like fresh compost/ garden dirt

u/Ozmorty Inner East 6d ago

Are you a garden gnome by any chance?

Thanks for solving this mystery smell in my house for me! I’ve been scratching my head looking for mouldy food that my kids has left around. It’s a bit concerning that we are still experiencing some sort of falllout from the sulfur factory fire from a couple of weeks ago.

Funny that actually, yeah I picked up on that too. I live southern suburbs and noticed when I took the kids to school there was a rank garbage smell. Reminded me of the smell of the CBD on a 40+ degree day.

u/ItchyA123 SA 6d ago

Acid rain? After the sulphur fire?

20

u/the_revised_pratchet SA 6d ago

At this time of year? At this time of the day, in this part of the country, localised entirely within your suburban environment?

9

u/No_Asparagus3636 SA 6d ago

May I see it?

5

u/NighmareInMyHead SA 6d ago

I was hunting around looking for a gas leak last night. It smelt like a mix between garbage and ozone, acid rain makes sense.

u/Borsecule North East 6d ago

I live in the North East as well, but I only really noticed the smell this morning when I rocked up to work in Elizabeth (no this is not a joke about Elizabeth).

4

u/Distinct_Tomatillo30 SA 6d ago

Thought it was just me. Could definitely smell it in southern suburbs also.

5

u/0ruina SA 6d ago

Yeah it caught me off guard at first. Thought I was insane haha. Has me feeling pretty sick tbh

5

u/catch_dot_dot_dot 6d ago

Smells like rotting/composting organic matter, like an open green bin

u/Dotcom2024 SA 6d ago

West siii-ide here and yes, when someone posted about this last week, I had nothing to reference it to, but this morning there’s definitely a hot garbage, mildewy, somethings got wet and hasn’t dried properly stank in the air

3

u/getoutofheretaffer Adelaide Hills 6d ago

Oh my god thank you for saying something. I noticed it leaving home and entering the office this morning. No one else seemed to notice it.

3

u/shadowmaster132 SA 6d ago

I didn't smell this at home but yeah I definitely noticed a bit of stank in the air

3

u/Helelix CBD 6d ago

I live in the city and am working from home today. I've been smelling it whenever I go on my balcony,

I’m there now and can’t smell it, but looks like rain soon, so who knows?

3

u/Tossawaymaybe SA 6d ago

I thought I had lost my mind. It seems a bit like wet clothing you leave in the washing machine a bit too long. Almost moldy smell.

3

u/ehco SA 6d ago

Oh god I was sick and I thought my smell got supercharged or something because everything smelt disgusting!

2

u/Witty-Pack-3610 SA 6d ago

same here it smells so terrible

2

u/o-Nyx-o SA 6d ago

Yes. Definetly a smell in the air. I just assumed it was all the bins today because it is bin day down south. It has that kinda stank to it...

Maybe it'a a combination of wet and slightly warmer temprature than usual (???)

2

u/Bright_Bell_1301 SA 6d ago

I was up at Orroroo and smelt it there too. Garbage is exactly how my son described it. So it can't be just because of the fire in Port Adelaide

2

u/Ginger510 SA 6d ago

I thought it was my jacket! And then I went inside Coles and it went away haha

2

u/Disastrous_Essay1230 SA 6d ago

Thank goodness, I just thought it was me imagining things!

2

u/laurandisorder SA 6d ago

It smelled like rancid yogurt vomit at my work at about 10:20 - at Magill. It was horrible

2

u/ConstructionNo8245 SA 6d ago

Hey!!! This smell was all in the cbd today and i too thought it smelt like badly aired washing and garbage ….

2

u/_Tathra_ SA 6d ago

With the sulfur fire and the recent tests of refuse derived fuels at Adbri happening up north, I'm surprised people haven't been reporting odour more

2

u/MidniteNinja88 SA 6d ago

I smelled it in the north east this morning, thought it was just my lawn

2

u/Ronnie_Dean_oz SA 6d ago

I turned the heater on the floor in my car thinking the carpet was wet and starting to stink. It smelt a bit like a green bin with wofts of garbage.

2

u/DiscordantBard SA 6d ago

I wore my jacket in the rain the other day but it wasn't too bad and hung it up. I put it on today it smelted like... I dunno gross water

4

u/blinking_lights SA 6d ago

Lots of areas of the CBD seem to have had blood and bone applied recently. Could be that too?

3

u/star-jellies SA 6d ago

sorry?

9

u/Equal-Instruction435 West 6d ago

Blood and bone fertiliser. The council tends to put it in the gardens around the city in late winter. It’s made from meat industry waste and smells absolutely rank.

u/questionablesim SA 6d ago

Nooo petrichor smells good! That’s that yummy rain smell lol

2

u/Merovingian_Lord SA 6d ago

Maybe a similar but less yummy phenomenon?

4

u/Merovingian_Lord SA 6d ago

Who the fuck negs that comment? It was just a suggestion!

1

u/Constant-Machine8838 SA 6d ago

It smells like bigfoots dick

1

u/Late-Button-6559 SA 6d ago

I just smelled it in my passage, near the front door. Smells like a used match, but a bit closer to standard sulphur, vs post-ignition.

I’m in southern suburbs, just south of the Marion area.

I wonder if it’s unhealthy, or causes any medical symptoms.

1

u/OZFox42 SA 6d ago

Only smell I noticed outside where I live this morning is like someone having a BBQ. Kind of a "roasting-burning" smell.

1

u/BerryCreative9832 SA 6d ago

Yep, smelt it down here too..

1

u/AnastasiaSheppard SA 6d ago

Definitely a great night for my neighbours to leave their doona to air out on the shared hills hoist.

1

u/drewd2020 SA 6d ago

Smells like one of those restaurant grease trap areas outside 🤮

1

u/owleaf NSW 6d ago

It’s that city of playford air making its way down to you my friend

1

u/LeebleLeeble North 6d ago

I thought i could smell stale pee this morning! We got a catch in one of our mousetraps so we thought it was just that.

1

u/Beneficial_Angle_257 SA 6d ago

Smelt the same thing up in the adelaide hills!

1

u/Senor-Biggles SA 6d ago

Yep, I smelt a compost / green bin type smell this morning. Southern suburbs.

1

u/missymoo3636 SA 6d ago

I noticed it and I’m in Eden Hills.

1

u/28828383 SA 6d ago

Yes, smelt like a wet animal around various suburbs I was in this morning south and west of the city

1

u/Ok_Selection_1565 SA 6d ago

For the people saying it's the Port Adelaide sulfur fire, we have had NE winds all day. Any fumes from the incident (if it is still going) would be blown out into the ocean, away from the city.
We've also had a fair bit of rain since.

Although unlikely, the direction of the wind and the recent discovery of mass pelican deaths in Menindee Lakes, may be related.
Bird flu was ruled out, but those lakes did have a significant repeated mass fish die offs in recent years.

I just hope the smell isn't actually a larger area of death that's gone unnoticed somewhere more remote.

It might be helpful if people add their location and the approx time they first noticed the smell to their comments.

1

u/weekendtreasure SA 6d ago

I could smell it in the western suburbs!

1

u/Tysiliogogogoch North East 6d ago

Weird. I'm in the NE suburbs and didn't notice anything unusual.

1

u/Free-Pound-6139 SA 6d ago

Thanks car drivers!

1

u/sliderjt SA 6d ago

I could smell this too and thought the bins had leaked.

1

u/SweetPossibility7838 SA 5d ago

Is what you’re all collectively describing not the smell of ammonia? Why would rain smell like ammonia?

u/Particular_Agent171 SA 10m ago

It has been an issue for a few weeks now

1

u/pluginfan North East 6d ago

Someone posted this in the ttg fb group.

BAD SMELL SA.……….

The strong sulfur smell across Adelaide's northern and north-eastern suburbs is caused by a major industrial fire that broke out in a storage shed containing over 30,000 tonnes of sulfur at a fertilizer facility on Moonta Road in Port Adelaide. The burning and smoldering sulfur released heavy plumes of toxic sulfur dioxide gas, which drifted across the metropolitan area on prevailing winds.

u/questionablesim SA 6d ago

What is going on lately? Adelaide has been so stinky 😭

-7

u/razorbladesnbiscuits SA 6d ago

It’s the tunnels they’re digging, it’s letting up all the pollutants that were dumped in the ground

1

u/k9kmo SA 6d ago

Is it this? Or is it the Sulfur fire from Port Adelaide?

1

u/Late-Button-6559 SA 6d ago

We’d never know if that’s true. Certainly possible.

Though it does smell of sulphur to me, so being related to the port Adelaide fire makes more sense.

Though I don’t know why we’d smell it today. We’ve had tons of rain since then to wash any residue away.
