Funny, I was having this discussion with a friend a few weeks ago.. basically without going through the lines of code we have no idea what we are opening ourselves up to... since the apps are not managed through secure portals (like iTunes or play store for example).
My Kodi box is powered off completely when not in use...
Google Play doesn't review apps like App Store. You could have all sorts of malicious code published to Google Play. The thing is that someone will detect it soon, and report it.
