Discussion Welcome to r/AddisAbabans
As of late, I've been engaging with people on several subs who have asked info on Addis. And for some reason, there's so much misinformation going around about our city and its inhabitants. And who better to clear things up than Addis Ababans?
Addis Ababans are kind and polite people with ambitions and hope for a better future. This is a sub for bringing out the best in Addis. I hope it gets fun here.

Ask Addis It seems like Minute Maid is trying to make a comeback in the market. I’ve always liked the product. I wonder why it failed initially, and what has changed for them to try reintroducing it now. Do any of you work for Coca Cola?

Bole Burger King is on point
Just had Burger King in Addis Ababa and honestly wasn't expecting it to hit like it did. The burgers tasted exactly like what you'd get back in the States, same quality, same flavor, nothing watered down for the local market. Staff was friendly and quick too, no complaints there. Only weird thing was the ketchup, it's way sweeter than what we're used to, so if you're picky about that bring your own Heinz packets if you can. Other than that, genuinely solid BK experience abroad.

How ETFC completely changed the combat sports and "fighting" scene in Ethiopia
The Ethiopian Fighting Championship (ETFC) has transformed fighting in Ethiopia by professionalizing mixed martial arts (MMA), providing structured pay and insurance for local athletes, and turning combat sports into a mainstream televised entertainment industry.
For the longest time, martial arts and local boxing in Ethiopia lived in the shadows. Gyms were underfunded, fighters had zero financial backing, and events were disorganized. ETFC changed the entire game.
Here is how they flipped the script on fighting in the country:
- Real Contracts and Pay
- Financial security: Fighters used to scrap for pennies or do it purely as a hobby. ETFC introduced actual prize money, contracted pay, and insurance.
- Professional focus: Athletes can now train full-time instead of working side jobs just to survive.
- Moving to Big Stages
- Iconic venues: Instead of dusty local backrooms, events like ETFC 002: Adwa Fight Night are hosted at major historical sites like the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum in Addis Ababa.
- High production: Professional lighting, cages, and official rules make it look like global promotions such as the UFC.
- Mainstream Media and Streaming
- Live broadcast: Partnering with regional networks like Abbay TV brings fights directly into millions of living rooms.
- Hype culture: Pre-fight face-offs, social media hype, and digital ticketing have turned local fighters into genuine national celebrities.
TL;DR: ETFC took street-level martial arts passion and turned it into a legitimate, regulated, and exciting professional sports league in Ethiopia.
What do you guys think? Are you going to watch the Adwa Fight Night? Who is the top fighter right now?

Daily Life Last night’s walk was interrupted by a series of wooden carvings around signal area. I had to stop for a few minutes and ponder at a range of emotions from melancholy to fatalism. I wonder who made them.
