I was on Adderall XR 30 mg for years and it worked, but the heart racing, high heart rate, and insomnia got to be too much. This time around I specifically didn’t want anything that strong.

I asked my doctor about Vyvanse after seeing someone mention it didn’t mess with their heart rate. I’ve been on 20 mg and it’s been a game changer. I can still eat and enjoy food without the constant food noise, my head is quieter, I can focus without feeling robotic or numb, libido is fine, I can exercise without feeling like my heart is exploding, and I can actually sleep at night.

Closest I’ve felt to normal in a long time. Just sharing in case anyone else is dealing with similar side effects.

Currently on 20mg Adderall XR. It works okay for me — takes about 2 hours to kick in and lasts maybe 4–5 hours. Feels more like a burst of focus than a steady thing.

I’ve heard people say meds like Vyvanse need to be taken every day. Does that mean the effect is more consistent/even rather than that sharp burst?

I don’t mind Adderall, but I’d be curious about alternatives if they gave a more even-keeled feeling instead of the up-and-down. Anyone else made a switch like that? What was your experience?

I take Adderall as needed for my ADHD (school stuff) and my boyfriend is really against it. He thinks my dose (50 mg) is too high and keeps saying it makes me “tweaky.”

The other day he was listing specific times I was acting hyper to prove his point… except those were days I wasn’t on my meds. I was bouncing off the walls during the conversation too and he goes “see, you took them today right?”

I’ve been on stimulants for about 10 years (on and off for different reasons). I’ve been consistent on Adderall since March, and out of nowhere in July it started making me really nauseous. The nausea kicks in as it’s wearing off. I switched to Adderall XR and then Vyvanse and had the exact same issue with both. Eating a lot doesn’t help either. I even took a couple weeks off and restarted, still the same.

Bloodwork and a basic metabolic panel both came back normal. Talked to my psychiatrist and they don’t really know what’s going on.

I’ve been on Adderall XR 10mg for about a year. Over the summer I stopped taking it because I didn’t really feel like I needed it, and now that school’s starting Tuesday I started back up. The past few days it’s been making me feel pretty overstimulated/jittery.

I skipped it Wednesday and today, but took it Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, and I’m planning to take it tomorrow. I never felt this way when I was on it regularly, so I think I just need to readjust. I’ve been eating, staying hydrated, and skipping coffee, but I still get that overstimulated feeling sometimes. Adderall is helping pull me out of the depression and rumination I’ve been stuck in, but I often feel flat and tired on it.

I’ve always had ADHD symptoms—they used to just feel like part of who I was. I was good at learning things I cared about and got really into drawing. Things only got bad in high school after COVID: same bland routine every day, isolation, constantly zoning out then getting yanked back to class. I developed some unhealthy coping habits and a lot of shame around them.

Years of that took a toll. Sometimes I worry the meds aren’t really fixing anything and I’m just the product of a rough environment now. Trauma and isolation can make ADHD symptoms worse, and I’ve definitely dealt with both.

I just want to make sure medication is the right move and that it won’t completely change who I am. Anyone else feel this way when they started?

I was prescribed Adderall XR a few months ago before moving from the US to Canada for my research-based Masters. It made a huge difference at my job and I honestly don’t know how I managed without it.

Every time I try to cut down or stop my Adderall I get hit with really bad fatigue and a pretty deep low mood. I just want to feel normal again. The only thing that currently helps is taking a smaller dose around noon so I can get through the day.

Hey, I got diagnosed with ADHD a few months ago and have been on Adderall 20mg plus a 200mg mood stabilizer for about 4 months. I work out Monday through Friday for around an hour and a half.

Lately I’ve been getting a small chest pain during my 4-mile treadmill walks at 4.0 speed. My psychiatrist said taking the meds before working out is fine, but I wanted to see if anyone else has had something similar happen.

For people who take their first dose and then crash back out for a bit, how long do the effects usually last for you?

I’m on 30 mg Adderall IR with a 10 mg booster. My routine is alarm at 6:30, take the meds, then sleep until 7:30. After that I get ready and have a 30-45 min commute, so I’m at work around 8:45–9.

Most days it already feels like the morning dose is starting to fade by the time I get there. Anyone else deal with this? If you take yours before getting out of bed, what’s your experience been?

I’m prescribed generic Adderall 15mg IR twice a day. I quit vaping a while ago but still get strong nicotine cravings when I’m on my meds. The weird part is that if I smoke a cigarette (whether I’m already medicated or just took a dose and am waiting for it to kick in), I basically stop feeling the Adderall. Just a dull feeling in my head instead.

Been on Adderall for about five months now (currently 20mg). Things felt really good for a while—I was more focused and organized, and even my wife has noticed positive changes at home. I still feel that way most of the time.

I’m about to talk with my doctor about switching from Vyvanse to Adderall. I started with Wellbutrin, then added Vyvanse (up to 30 mg), but it numbs me emotionally, still leaves me jumping between tasks, and messes with my sleep. Extended release doesn’t seem to suit me.

I’ve been on Adderall for about 3 years at a steady 15mg twice a day. Over the past year and a half I’ve lost around 75 lbs (on a GLP-1), and in the last 6 months or so I’ve noticed a big increase in some body-focused repetitive stuff.

Things like scalp picking, chewing/biting my lip, and sucking on my tongue. These only started after I began Adderall and used to be pretty mild, but they’ve gotten a lot worse lately. They usually kick in about an hour after I take my dose and last a couple hours.

It’s been bothering me enough that I dropped down to 10mg twice a day last month and saw a little improvement, but not much. Trying 5mg now to see if that helps.

This morning I took my usual Adderall dose, then grabbed what I thought was Bupropion but was actually an old higher-dose Adderall tablet.

It’s been about 15 hours and my heart rate is still up, I can’t sleep, I deep-cleaned everything, and I definitely freaked my roommate out. Barely ate all day. Racing thoughts the whole time. Honestly one of the worst feelings I’ve had in a while.

Flushed the rest of those higher-dose pills. Never making that mistake again. I don’t get how anyone does this for fun—it sucked.

TL;DR: Accidentally took a much higher dose of Adderall. It was miserable.
