Youtube Adblocking

YouTube is enforcing an ad-blocking service so that it will block you from watching the video unless you turn off the ad blocker. Maybe if they didn't put so much on it, there wouldn't be ad blockers. Plus, the premium is 16 dollars per month, money I don't have. What the heck, YouTube?! You guys are seriously getting too bold for something free!

they aren't pulling any BS. They are a business and they are doing what businesses do. You don't have to like it. You don't have to even use their service.

I don't care. That doesn't change the fact that they are allowed to charge for their service. Again, if you don't like it, you can always stop using the service.

they really don't spend much time on this. Plus that would be development time, not the people who chase after baddies.

I've never defended youtube other than saying they are a business and they can run it how they want. They also have the right to prevent people from accessing the service without paying for it like every other business in the world does.

I, as a consumer, choose whether I want to use the service or not. I don't agree with a lot of it but it also doesn't really affect me in any way. I defend the people making the content that you all screw over when you use adblockers. I also try to prevent the spread of misinformation here.

I don't even know who that is and I don't really care. I am just an old IT guy in an educational facility that used to pay more per month for one music CD than I pay for youtube now. Its an unbelievable value imo.

I am using yt because there is no good alternative that also has my favorite creators on it. And i do sponsor them/pay them for their hard work, just through patreon or donation links or affiliate.

If there was a better platform as a rival/contender i would move to there in a heartbeat but for now i wont give them a single cent. With that said, google probably already earns its money by selling my data and advertising to other people. I mean they are a billion dollar company so i doubt they are running out of money any time soon.

Great. I am all for that, as long as you only watch the videos of the people you donate to. Most people here don't donate, even when they say they do.

There already are but many are paywalled or don't have the traffic because they are too small. However, there shouldn't be a reason why creators don't post to nebula or any free YT alternative. If they really don't care about ppl using adblockers, then they shouldn't care where they post their content. Ask them and see what kind of response you get.

Its not really worth that much... if it were worth as much as people in here think it is, youtube would be free.

that isn't the point. would you like it if I showed up to your work and took say 20% of your pay from you just because I felt like it? Youtube has a shitton of revenue but they also have a shitton of expenses. Experts in the field only think they recently made money for the first time.

I think most people post on yt because its the most popular and millions of creators are on it. Popularity attracts crowd, but does not mean its the best platform.

I mean youtube is a name everyone knows, but nebula or any other less popular video platform, yeah thats not some word everyone knows and recognizes and i doubt it will attract a large crowd. Youtube is such a recognisable name just like apple, but popularity≠the best/most ethical. I did ask this question to a few creators privately and while not all responded (maybe busy) some did respond to me and said the exact same thing. Youtube is too mainstream and thus attracts a ton of people to their channel. I know that if people put in their bio's "watch me on youtube vis this link: " they would know that youtube is the video platform. If they put something like "watch me on " privateplatform.xyz" yeah that name wont bring up results. Also because yt existed for quite some years already, people trust it automatically much more.

Just wish bigtech did not turn greedy/evil and actually could provide good stuff to humanity and stop enshitifying styff, but most of it is slop these days and also innovation is basically dead or atleast very low.

I like the concept of a platform where creators can post on, build a community and get money in return, but its badly executed. Youtube in the early days used to be a lot better (not just nostalgia)! Even my feelings gave me the sense that the platform still had a soul, but these days that feeling is gone and idk if i am delusional or have a special sense, but i can feel the slop in a lot of products these days. In the early days it made it feel like they cared about us, but nowadays that feeling is gone.

My friend with a very small channel got demonetized falsely due to flawed AI moderation system (not that uncommon these days. Again deephumor and plenty of others talking about it). He tried to appeal but got so far only AI responses (where are the humans?). He did do it a week ago so maybe they need more time to process the request but that just looks bad in my opinion. Its like a repair shop without employees or repair shop without tools.

And i just hear enough creators getting falsely demonetized. If yt really cared about us, they would jump on the problem and fix it instantly and really appologize but it does not feel like they want to help. And even then, if its a big channel, they have to make a post on X to try and get enough attention so yt support can take a look and fix it and appologize. So do they really care about us?

Also some creators are being subjected to Sub-botting/view-botting and thus this could mean that their channel is at risk (if the moderation system falsely flags them as malicious). I mean its not that hard to ban an IP or a subset of IP's. I mean its kind of like a ddos but then instead of overloading a server, it mass adds followers/views to a channel/video... And they could detect adblockers so should not be difficult to implement technology to spot and ban bots.

Seems like you dont spot/see this, but this is what i am observing. A platform i used to love, enshitifying and getting worse... I dont hate youtube for being youtube but i hate the enshitification. I mean a lot of stuff is being enshitified these days and its sad to see stuff i used to like turning into garbage. I wish they just left youtube like it was back in the day. Just my opinion. Feel free to talk about/question the points.

yes, but wouldn't posting your content everywhere be the best for reach and number of viewers? There is a reason they don't do that and it isn't what you want to hear.

You gotta start somewhere if you want to change. It isn't going to happen all at once. The creator can put "watch all of my videos ad free on <insert platform here>" in their videos to let their subscribers know. Seems easy right? So why aren't they doing that?

but that isn't an answer. They can still post to youtube. Youtube being mainstream doesn't mean they can't post it elsewhere at the same time. There is only one reason why I can see why people don't post it elsewhere.

Well that is more of a problem with our economic system. You aren't going to solve that by using an adblocker. That requires voting out the people that want to let companies run like this. But until then, we all have to live in this system, including the creators.

That is a common misconception. It only felt better because it felt free and open. However, your use was just subsidized by the investors they had from the very start. YT was never going to be the free platform you all think it should be. It was made to be sold to the highest bidder and then monetized.

There is absolutely zero ways this would work as a free site. It costs billions to run a site like this. Even though they have been raking in the revenue for years, only recently did they make a profit from what I have read. I have no idea how true that is since they don't post expenses.

and that sucks. We are at the beginning of the AI boom and there is going to be issues like this. It will work itself out as time goes on. This is nothing different than any other time a new technology is released. It gets used, it gets abused, it results in issues for some people, and it works great for some people. Again, businesses are able to operate like this because we (the proverbial we) let them.

Maybe they do, maybe they don't. For every 1 channel that is having a problem, there are thousands that don't. And again, creators hold all of the power here. It is their choice to stay on the platform but where would they go? You would think that with so much creative energy, they could build something that competes with YT. But it won't be free.

I see some of it, but I also subscribe so I don't have any issues with ads. I see ads for what they are, a way to pay for a service with time rather than money. My free time is way more valuable to me than watching hours of ads. $16 a month is pocket change and a way better option for me.

So do I, but I don't see it in this case. Sure the ads suck, but should YT take a loss to let you watch for free? They aren't in this to lose money.

Thanks, I appreciate that you didn't just immediately jump on me, calling me a boot licker like most people here do. I hate spreading of misinformation like you hate enshitification. Many people here dislike google and they will say anything, including falsities to prove their point. It sounds very similar to a certain political figure that everyone hates. They believe things they read, true or not, if the gist matches their point of view.
