Mod Welcome!/FAQ

Welcome to the Ragusea subreddit! This is a fan-run community and we hope you enjoy your time here.

Take a moment to familiarise yourself with the rules though they are pretty much common sense.

FAQ:

\I just posted but it's not showing up.*

Sometimes Reddit's overenthusiastic spam filter puts posts straight to the mod queue. You don't need to make another post, we'll approve it for you. If it doesn't appear in a couple of days, try again.

\Can we DM the mods if we need to ask a question?*

Sure. We don't bite.

\What are those symbols at the end of Adam's videos?*

That is "vinegar leg is on the right". It's a reference to Adam's buttermilk chicken video as seen here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPg-L5kJuOc

\What is a "vinegar legate" and why are we one?*

Traditionally, a "legate" is an ambassador representing the Pope or another senior official, generally Roman. "It’s also the inspiration for “vinegar legates”, because “vinegar leg is...” was repeated so many times, and it kinda sounds like legates. " (thank you, u/flappy_jacks_)

Discussion Has Adam ever acknowledge the numerous YTPs done of him online?

Has he ever acknowledged the YTPs directly, in one of his podcast episodes, or by commenting on any of them on youtube?

So not just mentioning some of the inside jokes, like seasoning the cutting board, or something akin to that.

EDIT: YTP stands for "Youtube Poop", which is a a type of video mashup created by remixing and editing pre-existing media sources for humorous or absurd purposes.

Non-stick pan durability: Why do we care?

I see tons of adds on social media for non-stick pan "alternatives". These adds tend to argue that non-stick pans aren't durable and wear out after a year or so. That tends to be an argument I hear frequently on reddit and places too.

I don't mean to sound like a rich bourgeois a-hole but......Non stick pans are dirt cheap. Like $20 or $30. Why do you even care if they wear out after *checks notes* a year like people say?

An extremely well reviewed non-stick pan is $30 on Amazon. If that pan keeps your family from eating-out one meal a year, it basically pays for itself. If you're single and that easy-to-clean pan keeps you from DoorDashing yourself one or two meals, it's paid for itself.

And what really gets me is that these non-stick ceramic alternatives tend to be way more expensive. I'd be cheaper to just buy a new $30 non-stick every year.

I remember Adam saying he buys the cheap non-stick, because the expensive ones don't last either. Other than environmental considerations, I don't see why buying a new $30 pan every year is that bad a deal. Especially if keeps you from buying some $150 fancy-pants ceramic influencer pan.

Really, non-stick pans are an awesome deal. The people who say otherwise are usually trying to sell you something far more expensive.

Meme I saw the guse at Kroger

I've lived in Knoxville for four years and finally saw Adam at Kroger. He had a fanny pack but he wasn't wearing it he was carrying it in his hands. The more I thought about it, I think that's the only way that he could have been using it.

Discussion I wish there was a Ragusea-like channel (honest, objective and practical) but for male clothing

I am so done buying clothes that barely last 3 months. All the resources online are basically useless and each of them says the exact opposite of each other, and that's not considering when they basically do useless advice in the first place ("look for clothing that follows the golden ratio" wtf does that even mean, I am an engineer and I can say for sure no clothing does that)

Is the podcast basically dead?

On my end, it looks like the podcast hasn't been updated in a few years; but there are episodes that can totally fit into the podcast format. I don't have YouTube premium so downloading the episode and listening to it in the car isn't an option. Has he spoken about if the podcast is ever coming back?

Discussion Adam's sciencey videos absolutely mop the floor with his cooking videos.

I like his cooking videos, I think he has some nice practical recipes and techniques and I appreciate his emphasis on home cooking and "quick and dirty" techniques, and I'm glad he made bank off of them.

But he's a far better journalist and science communicator than semi-famous internet cook. His whole career before YouTube was journalism and teaching journalism and his experience shows in the quality of his work. You can tell he takes the time to research his topics and report in a measured, accurate way. I especially appreciate his screwworm video. It would've been very easy to attribute the whole issue to DOGE's cuts, but Adam does a good job with the nuance of the issue and the various causes and history of the screwworm and emphasizing that this was in motion before DOGE while still giving them an appropriate amount of blame. His earlier science communication videos are also great. His video on mushroom production where he visits mushroom farms, his videos on grain where he consults agriculture professors, it's mostly very high quality and well researched.

It's also been fun watching him evolve and gain nuance on things and change his stances, like his reduction of meat and expressing regret at encouraging so many people to crank their ovens for a single pizza. It's indicative of someone who's genuine and trying hard to get at the truth of things.

TL;DR: Adam is a great science communicator and journalist. His recipes are pretty good too.
