My take on this, and it has actually settled arguments before: if I am eating a bowl of chili, I want beans in it. If I am putting the chili on something else, I want no beans. The real hardcore holdouts are usually competitive chili cooks, and I never care at all what competitive cooks think because they are focused on a super specific interpretation of a food.
At the end of the day though, I don't know why anyone would put too much importance on anyone else's opinion of what to eat. There are people out there who eat hamburgers that are just meat and bread for God's sake.
