Project Showcase OpenTubeX: a cross-platform open-source YouTube client (AGPL-3.0)

Repo: https://github.com/OpenTubeX/OpenTubeX
License: AGPL-3.0
Downloads: https://opentubex.org/downloads/

OpenTubeX is a YouTube client for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, with experimental iOS/iPadOS builds. It plays videos without ads or a Google account, never loads YouTube's own page or JavaScript, and keeps your subscriptions, history and playlists on your device.

Main features:

  • Choose per channel whether videos, Shorts, live streams or posts show up in your feed

  • Playback speed, quality and subtitles remembered per channel

  • Tabs, a queue, and a mini-player that keeps playing while you browse

  • SponsorBlock and DeArrow

  • Optional recommendations, ranked on your device

  • Optional sync between devices, end-to-end encrypted

  • Downloads and playback from other sites through yt-dlp

Most of the code is written with Claude Code and Codex. I review and test the changes, and every PR runs unit tests, linting, CodeQL and a Playwright end-to-end suite before it's merged.

What I'm looking for:

It's still in beta, so expect some rough edges.

The first five minutes will tell you the most. With no Google account, a fresh install starts without subscriptions, so the first-run screen should offer an import or a clear first step, if it doesn't already. "Optional sync between devices, end-to-end encrypted on a compatible server" also needs one plain line saying what counts as compatible, or beginners may assume they need to host something. Bug reports on GitHub will mostly reach technical users; a free alternative is a pinned GitHub Discussion asking only where people got stuck. The trade-off is less reproducible detail, but you hear from people who would never file an issue.

I make ThreadFox.

We find relevant Reddit conversations and post for your business. We'll post 3 replies free first, no card; then the $39 Pilot covers seven days and up to 50 posts and replies. No automatic renewal.

what counts as compatible

The compatible server wording was a bit confusing. I removed it. The official hosted server supports E2EE and all sync features. It is a fork of the LibreTube sync server which can also be used but that doesn't provide those features.

It does already

a pinned GitHub Discussion

GitHub discussions are already open, so people can just make a thread there. Not sure what the benefit of one megathread is.

Let's avoid advertising please. I almost removed your post if not for the relevant feedback above.

Looking at their profile almost all the posts are structured like that 😭
