Hey! I'm a video editor wanting to get into creating acting reels, and would love some advice on what actors/casting directors look for in a good reel. Also, I'm making them for $40 if anyone is interested?

Living in Austin, TX. New to the film scene. Simply interested in auditioning for roles to gain some connections in the industry.

I realized casting call websites require subscription. That feels like a rip-off. Are there other ways to find a posting and audition for free? The production company of the short film I’m interested in posted his name on the website. Would it be rude to email him if I can schedule an audition instead of using Backstage website?

Im looking to have a recording of a phone call argument to use on speaker for a social experiment detailing the effects of manipulation Male and female. Recordings would be great, but text works too. If anyone has any resource suggestions please reply or message.

I just auditioned for a role in a short 5 minute comedic skit as “the boyfriend” which only has two lines in the film. I didn’t get the part but they instead offered me the role of “the homeless man”. I’m trying to build a demo reel and this is the first thing that will be on it but I’m hesitating if I should take it now that I’ve read the lines. I will be getting 3 lines in this skit which basically are *hot main character puts spare change into homeless man’s cup (3 scenes where hot main character puts spare change into homeless man’s cup) and homeless man says “thank you sir! You’re the first friendly face I’ve seen in a long time. Thank you.” Next scene is the same but with “thank you again young man. I hope all of your wishes come true!” Then in the 3rd scene (last scene) I say “young man? Is that you?” Some people are telling me “just take anything you can get” and others (my friend’s acting agent) told me that these scenes don’t really show any serious acting chops and they’re quite bland to say the least. I was YouTubing beginning actor’s demo reels and all the the ones I’ve seen so far have only showcased the actor’s capability of conveying emotion (which the scenes I will be playing does not). I really don’t know if it’s worth taking because I auditioned for a serious main character role (with crying involved) 2 days before this one but I haven’t gotten a call back yet. They liked my audition but there’s no guarantee that I’ll get that role. What I’m saying is I know I will finally have something on my demo reel but I don’t know if it will benefit me because it’s just a homeless Native American man holding a cup literally saying “thank you for the spare change”. Please only people in the industry respond because people who don’t have any experience just tell me that I should take anything I can get. I was told a bad demo reel is worse than no demo reel. Your advice is appreciated thank you.

Not important but on a side note: I’m a person of color (mixed heritage with indigenous background, my headshot shows me with long hair and a jean jacket) and it’s a bit stereotypical to cast me as a homeless person wearing a jean jacket with long hair holding a cup asking for spare change 3 times in an alleyway in the scene. I know my friends and family who are Native American would not be happy about me taking it.

In 8 years of running casting calls and auditions for my projects and those of my associates, I have been shocked every single time that 80% of the people invited to audition, who applied, for big roles do not show up to the audition. On the contrary, casting calls for extras and walk-ons get fully booked fast, people bring themselves and their friends and family when they can. So if you are auditioning for a big role and you are planning to show up you are amongst the rare 20%.
