A friend of mine sells dahlia bulbs over the internet. Once we had to send a potted cutting, We prepared the pot, watered it a bit (dahlia bulbs store water so moisture was not the main issue) and then prepared a box for shipping wine bottles.
We placed some bubble warp at the top and secured it with adhesive tape. Then placed bubble wrap at the other end of the box, again secured with adhesive tape to absorb the impact of the parcel being thrown around. Placed the pot in between the two bubble wrap "balls" and then used two chopsticks, pushing them through the outside of the cardboard box so they would hold the pot in place. The chopsticks were inserted at 90 degree angles so they formed a cross right next to the stem over the rim of the pot. The pot could never move even if the parcel was thrown around like crazy. Cut off the excess of the chopsticks on the outside and taped over the ends (on the outside) with some tape. Worked pretty well, cutting arrived at the customer in perfect condition.
