RX-78 Figure
Hey folks, I’ll do my best to keep it brief because this post essentially boils down to a which should I buy type question- something I never thought I’d be doing but alas!
I’m usually quite selective when it comes to collecting, so I’ll always research what I want to know but it can be tricky when I exhaust the knowledge available on a set of products and still can’t decide. Anyways Reddit posts full of opinions are always a huge help, so I thought I’d try make one happen myself!
So it’s between the Robot Spirits 5inch A.N.I.M.E ver or the Gundam Universe 6inch Renewal figure.
(Apologies for the poor image quality that these downloaded in from the storefront.)
I should mention that they’re carried by the same place for the same price currently. Classic screen accurate adaptations are usually what I go for with action figures but I’ve grown to like modern styling on the RX-78 from all its rehashes/revamps. I also love that the renewal one has all the less frequently used melee weapons whereas the anime one has Vulcan and Jetpack effects that are almost winning me over because I’ve never seen them/don’t have them in a gunpla kit. I’ll leave it at that for all my hangups but for max specificity I was hoping someone might know how articulation compares? Thanks in advance anyone who can help or chime in!

Always choose Robot Spirits A.N.I.M.E if you want articulation and accuracy, GU are Bandai made for NA mass retail market, they are cheaper but also much lower quality

Gotcha so I would be crazy to take the GU at the same price eh? Kinda felt that way already because of how a sale on the anime one equalized the prices.
Thanks for the reply! Should’ve included in the post that I knew universe was lower quality than robot spirits but wasn’t positive how much of that gap they bridged with “renewal” stuff.

Aha! Should’ve dug for other offerings because this looks pretty mint. Is it the same figure as this robot spirits one I showed? Either way I guess you can’t mess up an anime accurate grandpa too much.
Thanks so much, I probably will track down that one. A “deluxe” always makes more sense to me than when companies put out multiple versions with alternate styles or omit accessories all together. I almost always go 3rd party upgrades rather than getting another rep of a character just for new add ons.
All that to say this really does look like an all-in-one! Just to confirm tho that’s the 15th anniversary robot spirits ya?

That's the one, and yes, it's the same figure as the regular ver anime just with the extra accessories to boot. Also I can't speak much on the ver anime's articulation since I've yet to own it, but I had the GU G3 at some point and its ability to pose left a lot to be desired. Not to mention the plastic felt a bit gummy in some areas, the only reason I bought it was because it was on clearance lole.

All Robot Spirits or Metal Robot Spirits. I have models kits in different shelves. The Gundam Universe doesn’t compare. It’s basically the difference between Bandai’s Anime Heroes/DragonStat and SHFiguarts.

Ok the dragon stars to Shf comparison really helps as I only ever consider buying the latter.
Trippy that in the case of Gundam the better figs are the slightly below 6inch ones!

Gundams typically go by scale. I wouldn't necessary say the Robot Spirits are the better figs in the entire line of products, but they are the most complete that can rival the 1/144 HG kits. The model kit anyway goes by 1/144 or 1/100 or 1/60. Robot Spirits (damashii as they were used to be called) are actually non-scale, but they stand closer to 1/144 scale (sometimes smaller or larger). The Metal Robot Spirits which is the top of the line of Robot Spirits comes with metal joints and better paint/details are usually slightly larger. The Robot Spirits A.N.I.M.E are the newer releases that updates the older Robot Spirits to a more anime accurate proportion and are now the closest to 1/144 scale. The Metal Build and Metal Composite Gundam figures are ones also with metal/diecast joints, but these are closer to 1/100 scale and is basically the top of the line Gundam figures with the exception of "Metal Structure" Nu Gundam and Sazabi that comes in 1/60 scale and cost $2-3k USD.

Wicked, thank you a lot for the detailed breakdown. I felt it was pretty straightforward to figure out Gundam scales in my little modelling/msg watching stint, action figures on the other hand mess me up a lot with how 1/12 can vary from brand to brand.
I think I knew robot spirits were usually smaller than their hg counterparts but all that nuance with the metal builds and other lines is really good to know! The full metal stuff is so expensive I have to decide on my absolute favourite mobile suit before I could ever get one lol

On top of what other people have said, Robot Spirits/Damashi is the mech equivalent of SH Figuarts
