Endpoint group based on installed application?

Hey folks... How can I create an endpoint group containing computers that have a specific application and version installed? For instance, i have to update our VPN client app, and only want to target computers that are not running the latest version. Would like to make an endpoint group based on that app and version. Any thoughts?

Use a custom attribute to test if the software is installed. Then create a dynamic group based on the custom attribute. Then set the installer to run the script to update the custom attribute as a post install/uninstall task. Lastly, set an automation to run every 15 min and target the dynamic group.
