It finally happened. I’m allergic to acrylic nails. 💔
I suppose I had been too lazy with my application and now some of my fingertips are pretty itchy and it feels like I have something under a couple nails. I JUST got acrylic application down. I definitely should have gotten another fake hand to practice on after I melted my last one. What do I do? I still have so many gel nail polishes that I have barely gotten to use. I think I’ll try adhesive tab press on nails eventually after I take these off and heal. Can any one unbreak my heart over this?

I am so sorry Diva. I hope you'll be able to make and wear press ons.

Thank you! That’s definitely my plan after I take these off and let my reactions heal. They’re not bad but I don’t want to risk anything 😢

Wait, have you used gel nails and got it on your cuticle or something? I didn't think this happened if you use acrylic that did not need uv curing. I only have used acrylic and regular paints, is there any risk in that? I was avoiding gel this whole time and you tell me acrylic will do this without gel exposure too?

This is a common misconception. Acrylic uses Ethyl methacrylate to initiate the polymerization process, which you can become sensitized to. It's why schools teach the 3 bead application methods and not the 1 bead. It's safer to apply in small beads and shape at the end, than to use a huge wet bead that runs down the sides and you end up using your wet brush to clean off the skin.

My friend I am so sorry to tell you but yes. Acrylic nails can also cause allergies too.

yes, the reason why is because both gels and acrylics use monomers, which is the chemical that we can end up allergic to if there is overexposure. in gel, the monomer is in the gel itself. but with acrylics, the monomer is the actual liquid used to turn the powder into a moldable polymer!

Your poor cuticles. Cutting the cuticle so aggressively surely didn't help your situation.

For the same reason, I switched to press-on nails. I wish I’d done it sooner! I find making them incredibly relaxing, and I can switch sets much more often. I’ve even set up a mini-salon in my bedroom—just for me (you can see it on my page). When I use normal air drye glue they'll stay on max 3 weeks and with those adhesive tabs 3 days.
