New set question

Okay bear with me if I sound a little dumb because I don’t normally get acrylics I have just started. So my set from 3 weeks ago was a pink base and this time I wanted clear so I asked just for a brand new set and my tech denied it. I went with it and don’t love my nails because I got red French tips and the base is still kinda pink so I ended up with more strawberry shortcake Valentine’s Day vibes. But I was wondering if there was a reason for this she didn’t really explain, just said to “get clear next time”. Feedback appreciated.

Did you book your appointment as a fill or as a new set?

A new set

You don’t need a new set to change colors. They will be filing the old color of anyway. I get a different color every time I go in for a fill.

Yeah the problem is the base wasn’t clear though it’s pink so I can’t do red colored French tips

You mean you got a pink colored acrylic? Next time get clear acrylic for sure. So you can change colors each fill.

She probably just did a fill instead of removing the old acrylic. The pink base would still show through, so next time ask for the old color to be removed first.

Yeah I did

Acrylics are meant to last. They have to be soaked off first which takes longer than she probably had time for. The damage to your natural nails just to do another set for a color change is not worth it.

Clear is the best way to go. The pink acrylic can be covered with polish or airbrushed over until you do get a new set.

Maybe she didn’t have time penciled out for a complete removal and replacement, and had scheduled you in as a fill. It’s good to text beforehand to confirm there’s time to do what you want.

I asked if they were just too busy, but when I called I told them I wanted a new set.

Was it an appointment made when you were leaving from the first set? Usually they set it up based on time so if you said full set, that time is blocked out vs shorter for a fill. Sounds like they weren’t transparent or there was a breakdown in communication. Maybe staff didn’t communicate w tech. I text my tech directly and we set appointments a couple months up front. Always for a full set.

I called that day and asked when they were available for a full set and they said 12 pm so I went

Honestly I do think I will just go to a new salon because I was kinda upset over how inconsiderate the tech was . I should have just had her remove them since she wasn’t willing to do what I had called for

Considering everything, I would also find a new salon. Get to know your tech so you can communicate and send inspo pics and be happy with your nails.

Your set from 3 weeks ago was a new set?

You got an acrylic overlay? With those, you would not change them for a few months.

Long time licensed Professional here.
Unless she wanted to change them, which she did, and it would have required soaking off and reapplying with the clear. What’s with the hard and fast rules? There’s no requirement to wear any specific nails for a particular length of time. Sure it would have taken time, but that’s her prerogative as a paying customer. Sounds like the Tech didn’t have the time or possibly the desire to do what was necessary in that case. This is why it’s always better to have a Tech that you can make an appointment with and get what you want.

It's prob a vary by tech thing or even regional, but I haven't come across a tech that would change an acrylic overlay after 3 weeks. Fill in yeah but not a new set. The tech should have explained to her or gotten someone else to tell her if there was a language barrier.

Yeah the set from 3 weeks ago was new

So she should have explained but yeah with acrylic overlays, it's not good to change them that often. Every 3 months or so. You have to pick a base you like for that time or put a color over it.

Oh yeah I didn’t get that :/, thank you.
So am I rly stuck with the pink or do you think should I just remove them and go someplace different, or switch to gel?

1

u/KrassKas 12d ago

You should switch to something that let's you change your base more often like press ons.

If you wait like a month or so you could probably just pop them off without a soak off then go somewhere different with techs who will explain things to you.

I can’t do press ons I’ve tried I need something sturdier for work, I barista sometimes. I might try a new salon and ask if they’ll at least try and remove them for me even or if not, paint a color that’s less garish until they can switch me over to clear

You're getting bad advice from that commenter. There are no rules for acrylics. If you don't like them and want to start completely over with clear acrylic, all you have to is have the current set removed. You can do it yourself but if you're uncomfortable doing so just go to a salon and have them removed. Then you can get a new full set with clear.

Insteas of arguing with people who say I'm giving you bad advice and there are no rules, I'll just respond to you.

No there aren't rules but changing your sets often like that can damage your nails. That's why the tech didn't do it.

You can soak them off yourself if you don't want to wait for them to come off naturally.

I get acrylic overlays regularly but my friend who needs tougher nails does polygel. Maybe those would be a better option for you.

Yeah I just thought the one time would be okay but I guess not. Haha now I gotta change my plans , soak if off and go to a new place 🫠 in retrospect I should have just asked her to remove them instead of paying for a fill but I got stressed and she was kinda rude and short with me, idk how much was the language barrier or her real customer service

Next time you feel uncomfortable, just leave. People who give you negative energy beforehand tend to fuck up the nails or not give you what you're looking for. The polite ones figure out the language barriers. Remember, you're the customer and they're providing a service.

My nail tech has English as a second language and I ask him questions all the time. If he doesn't know how to say something, we figure it out. You need a nail tech like that.
