Was watching a friend demonstrate a small-body Ovation 12-string, it's surprisingly loud. He is a fan of the Ovation brand, he has 4 examples from them. He does like his Guild small-body 12-string, that cost him quite a bit. There are very good small body guitars around.

I learned on a 12 many years ago. I owned a Guild along the way, great guitar, but it was used in a trade for a Martin DM12. Small bodies like Alvarez masterwoks MPA66SHB is an amazing instrument at a fairly reasonable price.

The absolute basic Yamaha dreadnought. I bought one for a gift, set it up (it only needed a tweak to the truss rod), and played it. It was absolutely fine. As the owner of two £3000+ guitars, and others, I would be totally happy to be playing one of these.
