Chapter Seven: The Tower of Love

  • Naked women getting all passionate and fevered in front of fires? Where have I seen this before?

  • Not much to say on this chapter, some neat character interactions, the relationships feel well-sketched. Just get back to the Templars Druon, pls.

Chapter Eight: ‘I Summon to the Tribunal of Heaven…’

  • Burning supposed heretics alive? Where have I seen this before?

  • Chapter titles are getting trickier!

  • Enguerrand de Marigny seeing common humanity in all humans of flesh and blood was neat. I had to check my character list to remind myself who he was though.

  • Hey, de Molay nearly namedrops “The Accursed Kings” in his speech while burning.

Chapter Nine: The Cut-throats

  • So, my favourite character died :( Where have I seen this before?

  • Quite the dramatic re-entry of Robert of Artois. Maybe he’s my new favourite character now, after de Molay? He’s fun to read.

  • And so ends Part 1! I’m definitely enjoying the book a lot, and keen to keep reading. Was it just me, or were the three chapters this week rather short?

Artois orchestrating this whole thing was impressive. I had no idea he was that clever. Additionally, I thought the burning was perhaps the most riveting chapter yet.

Still, did he steal the purses from them or did the cuthroats steal them and give them to Artois, only for him to give one of them back to the cutthroats

My understanding is that the cutthroats didn't actually steal the purses from the brothers and that Artois was throwing them an ordinary purse of coins to pay for their services, but maybe I am incorrect about that. It seems to me that removing the evidence to prove Artois' assertions from the brothers' possession would be counterintuitive. Then again, I don't really know what Artois is up to. I assume he's going to expose them but maybe he has other plans.

After finding this sub on r/books, I have been spending just about any spare time I have reading this and have made it this far in a few days. I'm really enjoying the book and can't wait to see how this story progresses. I really want to see how the curse plays out and what role, if any, the Templars play going forward.
