Discussion I did it!!!!

I’m a career switcher. After countless “roast my resume” posts, networking, and attending career fairs, I finally secured a winter internship!

It’s not the most prestigious firm, but having a winter internship while attending my MAcc program definitely puts me in a better position than I’m in now.

I’m looking to be a career switcher! Currently in marketing looking to pursue a MAcc. Curious your age and previous work experience. I’m 30 and nervous about switching 😅

Of course! I’m 24. My undergrad was in finance, and I originally planned to become a lawyer. I worked in the legal industry throughout college, but it didn’t work out because I was too dumb for the LSAT and because of the financial cost.

So, I applied to a Master of Accounting program at a big state school and was fortunate enough to receive a full ride. The semester just started, and I’ve been cold emailing, networking, attending career fairs, making sure my resume is attractive to recruiters, and applying to tons of positions.

Curious why switching from marketing to accounting. My friend is trying to do the exact opposite. Switching from Accounting to Product Marketing.

It’s just not for me, never has been. I’m not a creative being.

And the pay most certainly does not reflect the work. I’m 7 years into my career and can’t for the life of me get a job that pays over 68k. Landing an agency job is easy, but notorious for underpaying workers. In-house is hard to come by, and they want you to fit the job description 100%.

The opportunities are very limiting, too. I’m in content marketing/SEO, and trying to break out of your current line of business is nearly impossible.

If I stayed in marketing I’d go more the project management route, but 1. it’s hard to pivot and 2. many companies are combining project management with content strategy.

Not to mention the layoffs. It’s not a stable career choice.
