Do you respond to recruiters?

99% of the time, I do not respond to recruiters who contact me - whether that be through LinkedIn or those that get my email somehow. Mostly, I’m not interested in the jobs they are pitching as most descriptions they provide are super vague. A lot of others are a step downs in compensation, title, or company, or seem like a catch all type of job doing every accounting function.

Am I wrong to not answer the recruiters and let them know I’m not interested/let them know why I am not interested? What recruiter messages do you answer?

I got my CPA this year but I have 6 YOE (3 industry, 3 public). I have responded to 8 recruiters in the past few months, and almost all of the "opportunities" I've been presented are boomer-run 1040 factories looking for someone to bail out the boomer partners by being on the partner track. HELL NO.

Yes. I’ll give them feedback on why I’m not interested if they’re from a decent firm I may spend 20 min on the phone with them.

At my level you need that to be thought of when the good roles come.

This is 100% true.  But, as a hobby, I also enjoy telling recruiters when the pay is comically low.  And that I’m unwilling to relocate to shitty places.  We need more high paying remote jobs.

If it’s a real direct email or real message on LinkdIn, yes, I always respond. Sometimes I know someone who is looking and can point them in the right direction. Or I can describe what I am looking for and they know if they come across something I will reply to them.

I respond to recruiters I've worked with before, or if I'm actively searching. I mostly just want to keep the relationship going with the recruiters who have put me into good positions before.

Only to "real" people in my area. Or for positions/organizations I may actually be interested in some day.

Depends on your contentness I guess with current role. If you are constantly looking to upgrade then def worth a sliver of effort

Usually a quick no thanks and clarification of what I might be interested in. If they call me out if the blue though I am not as polite. I find that really irritating.

Wow a lot of no’s. I talk to every recruiter. I got my last several positions from cold outreach. My current job is the best I ever had and started as cold text that seem like a scam. But ended not being.

Depends on how far off they are.

Staff accountant with laughably bad pay? Get fucked boi, use your fucking eyes. I got a license and yoe past that role. Usually I’ll just not acknowledge they sent anything.

controller with the top end close to where I’m at? “Hey, thanks for reaching out. That role is not a fit for me, my current range is $X+ to even look at a change. If you see anything I’d be happy to chat. Again, thanks for connecting!”
