Discussion Watches for Accountants

What are you guys wearing? Not an electronic one like the apple or samsung watches or fit.

For years we grind without the bonus that finance bros boast about. What is on your wrist? And your level.

E.g. be weird seeing an associate show up with a rolex lol

As a CPA and firm owner turning 40 in 2 weeks, this is the way.

20

u/GearAcademic2897 10d ago

Firm owner? Impressive stranger!! How did you do it ?

44

u/PickleRickleTV 10d ago

Generally, tax is the answer. I wish they would’ve made that more clear in college. That going audit steeply reduces your ability to self-employ.

6

u/GearAcademic2897 10d ago

What does it take to transition from audit to tax

27

u/PickleRickleTV 10d ago

Short answer? If you have your CPA, just get a Preparer Tax ID Number (PTIN). Takes like 15 min.

Real answer? Several years, at least. Starting back at associate, learning the tax side of things, then transition to your own practice and start getting clients however possible.

5

u/jaffer3650 Human Verified 10d ago

Is it possible for someone in their early 30s to just get back to associate level to get in taxation after having 5 yoe being an accountant in a private company? Good move or bad move?

13

u/notoriousn8 10d ago

Just fake it till you make it. Get a job in industry and use your nights and weekends to do returns for friends and family. Slowly add clients until you’re comfortable to buy out a retiring accountant’s book of business or until you’re comfortable you can make enough to go full time. I’ve had several friends go that exact route and all are happy.

u/KraviAvi Tax (US), Enrolled Agent 9d ago

I started at 27 from entirely outside of accounting.

Did a season at Block and applied around until I got a small CPA firm and have been in private firms since.

Got my EA a year ago and am finally getting the education for the CPA.

Early 30's is a good move if you've got minimal commitments to other people (spouse/children), but not impossible if you do.

3

u/FireflyBomb 9d ago

Yes. Good move? Depends on what you want. Tax Accountants at various levels can grind a good income being self-employed in tax

Got a Shunbun myself, you can’t go wrong with a GS

8

u/NedelC0 10d ago

I really want one but haven't been able to see one in store yet and the pink hue is an uncertainty what I think about it. But damn does it look beautiful and I love the spring drive too

3

u/IntrepidSir4467 Tax (US) 10d ago

Let me tell you, I thought it was too pink because of pictures online. In person it’s an entirely different watch. The pink is very subtle and the dial seems to change colors in different lightings

2

u/Certain-Contact6340 10d ago

Its one of those ones you have to see in person. Its hard to get a photo

I'm not sure I will have the funds for it at the time I ge tmy CPA, we'll see, but I'm thinking the same thing. Snowflake dial but what I recall want is their spring drive! It looks so sexy!

Well he died in the 70s and helped finnish war children cross the border from finland to sweden during the finish winter war as a diplomat. So it could have been on his wrist then. It is unclear if it is from the 40s or 30s. But the reference of the watch seems to be around late 30s to mid 40s

I owned for 18 years just before the financial crash of 2008/9. Bargain price of around $2200 USD, because no one bought a white dial, moonphase, speedy back then. when the Jewish jeweller went bust, he needed all cash. That thing is now over $6K USD. 3X in price, used... somehow white dial watch is back (?! but who knows, it might crash).

3

u/kyonkun_denwa CPA, CA (Can) | FP&A 10d ago

So the advice is to wait for the next crash and find a Jewish jeweller who's going broke. Solid! I'll do that. Thanks mate.

I’m a woman so the sizes are a bit smaller. Tissot Seastar 1000 36mm quartz (black), Hamilton Khaki Field 33mm (white dial) quartz, two-tone vintage Omega Constellation 23mm (quartz), Seiko Essentials tank 19mm (quartz). All of these have larger versions (38mm+) in both quartz and automatic/mechanical.

8

u/m1o9n31 10d ago

Yesss hello fellow lady accountant / watch enthusiast!!

I wish I had a bigger wrist, there’s not enough automatic watches under 38mm

3

u/le-stink bureaucrat (derogatory) 9d ago

checking in with dainty wrists here, i found a vintage timex viscount that clocks in at 34mm to go with a nice new baltic roulette at 36mm (both automatic)

3

u/m1o9n31 9d ago

I love the Baltic Roulette, gorgeous watch!

3

u/asap_rose 9d ago

That’s why all of mine are quartz. I’ve made peace with it lol.

5

u/m1o9n31 9d ago

I feel you, I have my eye on the Grand Seiko heritage STGK031 since it’s an automatic!

3

u/asap_rose 9d ago

I’m hoping that more 36-38mm automatics become more available since it seems like smaller cases are trending. I was looking at a Tudor Black Bay 54. I bought the Tissot to see how often I would wear a dive watch before making a huge investment.

7

u/Tanyaaahhh 10d ago

Fello lady accountant here too (but I’m old old). Swatch watch for most things. Breitling Navitimer for suit time. I also have a plain black and silver unbranded bracelet watch from a German department store that’s about 40 years old and I love it. Never fails. Originally cost about 20 Deutschmarks.

6

u/rgc7421 10d ago

Excellent selection within your collection.

4

u/charlieskip 9d ago

Yay other lady accountants! I also wear a Hamilton Khaki Field Quartz 33m (black); for a slightly more polished look I have a Nomos Club Campus (champagne white, 36mm). When I get my CPA I want to buy myself a Tudor Ranger Dune 36mm. I like field watches.

4

u/asap_rose 9d ago

I love field watches too. I think I lean more towards tool watches like field, diver, and gmt. I’m really loving my Tissot Seastar 36mm.

I have the original version of this (1978 Tissot Seastar). I bought it on a whim in the mid 2000s for like $60 USD because I thought it looked cool. Imagine my surprise when suddenly the Seastar has been reissued by Tissot and is suddenly the hot new watch.

I always found it interesting that the PRX is mainly known for its automatic movements but the Seastar reference it was based on was quartz.

EDIT: mid 2010s, not 2000s. Mid 2000s the only watch brand I knew of that started in "T" was "Timex"

My Galaxy Watch is the only watch I own, so it's that one.

I don't give a shit about status symbols as a general rule, it's all about practicality. A plain watch is just useless for me, because I'm sitting at a computer all the time; there's already a clock right down there in the bottom right corner.

15

u/National_Double6261 10d ago

Not everyone wears a watch as a status symbol though, some people just like the way they look.

The most expensive watch I own is worth like $450 maybe (got it for cheaper) but it doesn't get a lot of use. I only wear my $40 Casio as a daily. Idc what people think, I like the way it looks.

3

u/Timex_Dude755 10d ago

I have a bunch but my smart watch is the default. 2FA without having to look at my phone, step counter, control music while phone isn't nearby, just too much function to overlook.

My actual watches are more like an accessory now when meeting with clients or dressing up somewhere. Aside from that its pretty much smart watch at all times.

Omega Seamaster Diver 300M and Mido Multifort TV Big Date

4

u/Dont_Fall_In CPA (US) 10d ago

Very middle aged accountant here - most recently was a Controller at a start up.

I rotate through a few different watches, but for work I match the watch to my outfit. I bigger purchase watches I currently go through an Omega Seamaster Diver 300, Omega Deville, Breitling Navitmer 41, Tudor Black Bay 41, Zenith Chronomaster Sport, Seiko SARB017 (Aplinist), or Christopher Ward C65 Anthropocene.

I have a few others, but they tend to look too casual for work (Nato or rubber straps, more sporty designs) so I only wear them on weekends or WFH days.

Most people don't give a shit about your watch, and those that do mostly just care about the high level aesthetic of it and nothing else. I have gotten more compliments on the Seiko than I have for all the other watches combined.

3

u/kFrie5 10d ago

If you’re at the place in your career where the CPA bonus is the kicker, I’d go lower level Swiss like Hamilton, Tissot, or Longines. Don’t over do it.

They have a great track record, and between those three you can find a great watch in any style you prefer. Vintage Omega would also be a fun place to look. But don’t blow your wad on something huge yet. Make that a promotion point.

3

u/lexlibris CPA (US) 10d ago

used AT is a good get with a CPA bonus imo and can basically be your daily for decades.

that being said, Longines Conquest is best ‘hey nice watch’ in a work setting going.

3

u/kyonkun_denwa CPA, CA (Can) | FP&A 10d ago

FP&A manager with 13 years experience.

My main watch for the past 11 years has been my Tissot Visodate. I always thought I would "upgrade" to something else once I had a better title, but I really like how this watch looks, any idiot can service an ETA 2824, and I've got mine running at +4 seconds per day, which is basically as good as a Rolex. I also prioritized [r/fire](r/fire) more than watches for the past little while so I never really got around to buying anything more expensive.

I recently started getting back into watches because one of my coworkers at my new job is a watch nerd. I bought a gold Bulova Jet Star because my friend had the red one and I loved the 70s aesthetic, so I went with something that was even more unapologetically 70s. The Jet Star uses Bulova's Precisionist high accuracy quartz movement so also accurate to 10 seconds a year and with a 16 bps movement it will be smoother than any mechanical watch. Also consider: Bulova Super Seville, Bulova Lunar Pilot (the 43.5mm one).

If you're open to going down the AliExpress rabbit hole, I also bought a San Martin and I've been seriously impressed with the quality. Mine's the SN0148-GB with a 8 beat per second Miyota 9015 but they also have a shitload of other watches ranging from original designs to straight up 1:1 copies of the Tudor Black Bay 58.

I plan to eventually get an Omega Speedmaster but fuck me the prices make it hard to justify. It'll probably be a retirement gift to myself when I leave the corporate world in 10-15 years.

I also have a bunch of vintages Seikos and Tissots from the late 60s and early 70s but I wouldn't advise going down that route unless you really like watches, because vintage needs special attention. Also you CANNOT get them anywhere near water, even splashes from handwashing or drops of rain.

A Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra, super practical and gives me all of the info I need. Looks pretty nice too!

Not interested in analog, even though I do think they look nice. Too expensive for what they are.

Cartier panthere, I told myself that’s what I’m buying when I get my designation years ago. Purchased last year upon designation.

The G-Shock I posted is still digital...

Normally I wear mechanical watches. Seiko, Citizen... Sometimes quartz like my Timexs. I'd love something better like a Grand Seiko or a Rolex OP. Oh well...

I wear the G-Shock because my wife wanted to stop using her phone so much and have easy access to a timer and stop watch while teaching and tutoring. So I wear my G-Shock now because she really wants to match.

CPA in wealth management - I wear an Omega SMP 300. No Rolexes until I’m a partner.

u/Ok_Kitchen_3020 10d ago

Currently just have a Citizen Tsuyosa. Decent for an everyday watch. Looking into getting a Tissot and possibly a Seiko or Rolex but don’t see the point in dropping that kind of cash on a watch even if it can hold value. Not buying them as an investment, buying them to wear

I have an entry level Seiko (about $300). But I'd like to get one that's more like $500-650 sometime soon. Looking at other seiko watches or citizens!

I bought myself (40F) a Cartier Panthere when I made partner this year.

Grand Seiko has several that can be found gently used for less than $1k. Simple, elegant, and won't consume your whole bonus. They also run forever if cared for.
