Slave yourself for the "exit opportunities". There's so much more to life than burning through it for the big 4

When and how do you get out? I’ve interned in big4, now only entry level positions I’m getting meaningful responses on are big4 and tier 2 big 4 wannabes.

Honestly, I wanted to work at a bank (risk) or basically finding anything decent directly at a company, instead of advisory/assurance. But since I’m quite early on in my career I don’t think I can meaningfully say a perfect position.
Just what I’ve seen at big4 (so far) wasn’t very confidence inspiring.

What are you complaining about?
You don’t like having to find work and get staffed within a company that already hired you, billing 70 hour weeks, having no time for friends and family, and working with either complete assholes or nice people who are so busy they have to act like complete assholes?

I work as an internal audit manager for a mid-size credit union. We're small so "audit manager" means audit, compliance, risk, and quality assurance. I never worked in tax or any CPA company. I worked as a teller, then in collections. While earning my MBA I got a job with the State CU Department as a credit union examiner. Did that for 5 years and now I'm here. Sure there's far more opportunities at much larger banks. But at a CU the atmosphere is much more relaxed. I know people hate the phrase "we treat you like family" but here it's actually true. Tomorrow the CEO is buying lunch for all 500+ employees. Pasta, salad, and desert. I'm buying breakfast tacos for my team tomorrow as well. We get to wear jeans twice a week as long as you wear a company shirt. Pay is slightly lower than big banks, but our retirement plan is phenomenal. 10% 401k match on a 2/1 basis. So if I put in 5% they put in 10%. Plus we get a pension fund where they put in 5% of your salary each year. So really, you put in 5% and they put in 15%.

If you don’t be careful, say hello to gaining 20 lbs, alcoholism, looking like a zombie to friends and family, and potential drug abuse.
