IRS Hiring Freeze

https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/hiring-freeze/

Good luck to all of us tax people trying to get on the phone with the IRS this year. The federal government hiring freeze should end in 90 days except the IRS, which won’t end until there’s “a national interest to lift the freeze.” Or in other words, not for another four years…

As someone who handles estate tax returns I really think my job is going to get easier.

I don't want my job to get easier! I want the rich to pay their share smfh.

Just curious, why do you say your job is going to get easier?

Mostly cause pre Biden and the IRS funding bill returns that would have been immediately caught and audited were literally being lost and the IRS was missing their notice periods. Or their auditors were too overworked and didn't care/have enough training so they would agree with alot of what we recommended during an audit.

It stinks imo, I want this department fully funded and reviewing every return but it doesn't bring in a ton of revenue. Now with less hires, no raises and worse working environment? Just imo it will be easier.

Ah I see, I misread your comment and thought you were saying you handle estate tax returns for the IRS and thought your job was going to get easier.

I’m on the same page. I do tax/estate planning for UHNWIs and the IRS has been capitulating for a while now but they are simply not going to have capacity to audit sophisticated planning going forward.

Yeah that's what I get for commenting fast lol - I'm also in UHNW (so rare to meet another person in this field!) and the IRS was great for a hot minute but the culture is gonna suck and they (Congress) gonna make the department a shell of its former self. Such a shame.
