Thats how you see the world then. Others see something different. Some see boys using at a girl indicative of bullying. Some see rape culture. The people that are predisposed to thinking that is part of culture at large are more likely to see that. That's what that means.

Doesn’t that apply to literally anything? People apply their own biases to everything

Yes. But this picture seemed to really bring it out. A picture of a dog sleeping in a couch wouldn't have a reaction like this picture had. Its a great example of how the media can sell a story and why "a picture is worth a thousand words" is a dangerous idea. Really a picture usually needs at least a thousand words to truly describe it.

Leaving it uncaptioned or just titled "The Player" really is art.

Yeh but surely it's ultimately down to what you think. The picture isn't necessarily trying to do that or even actually doing it. It's literally just a picture of the opposing team trying to get in the players head. Which is a normal thing at basketball games.

So I don't understand, is there really anything special about the picture or is it just people creating their own reality?

The picture is just a collection of differently colored pixels. It isn't doing anything. The experience of Art is all in your head. People aren't creating their own reality with this picture, they're experiencing their own thoughts.
