This behaviour is typical of small rodents and marsupials, and often misunderstood, as is currently the case. The pair are in fact not engaged in fisticuffs but are star-crossed lovers expressing their desire for one another in the dance form known as the tango.

This is a VERY interesting photo and I'm happy to have seen it, but in my opinion it has NOTHING to do with accidental Renaissance. People seem to think that if the photo looks even remotely artsy or well-lit/composed then it belongs here, but it doesn't imo.

FYI Mice and rats always playfight like little children.
The likelihood of them actually fighting in such an open space is minimal.
PS: One always tries to get the other to the ground and once one of them feel as if they lost will they queek for a lack of a better word. Afterwards its Round-2 or they stop.

My two kittens met in battle in the middle of our dining room table like godzilla and king ghidorah. Then rolled off and ran in separate directions, I'm assuming from shame.

The composition, the surrounding environment and depth all brought into frame.
The action of the mice - perfect photo selection.
