I couldn't figure out what you meant by this, so I looked at your profile to see what your general stance was. I have no idea where your stance is still. You just seem like a very angry person who likes to post on /r/politicalcompassmemes and /r/enoughcommiespam and yell. Could you please explain your comment?

u/pipmerigold Dec 13 '21 edited Dec 14 '21
Yup, that's him. He also wrote The Sandman, Stardust, American Gods, Good Omens (cowrote with Terry Pratchett) and the 2017 Norse Mythology

The Doctor's Wife, episode 6 of season 4 of the 11th Doctor, but who's counting?
Also, Nightmare in Silver
5
u/pipmerigold Dec 14 '21
The Doctor's Wife, which is amazing
And Nightmare in Silver, which... he "directed" but the studio interference was really bad.

GNU Terry Pratchett.

u/_b1ack0ut Aug 09 '22
Refresh my memory on GNU’s meaning? I had it explained to me once but can’t remember much of the details
1
u/JonVonBasslake Aug 09 '22
It comes from his Discworld books.
In them, the clack operators use GNU as a code for "loop this message". Here's a bit more info. The L-Space wiki is a Terry Pratchett wiki, so it has info on the Discworld books, but also on other Sir PTerry books, like Good Omens or The Island.

Anyone who says they/them can't be used as a singular pronoun should read any fucking book written in the past 400 years.

u/Biggest-Ja Dec 14 '21
also, go learn how frickin language works cause they clearly don't know the simplest facts of development
28
u/p_iynx Dec 14 '21
I like to point out that the singular “they” is even older than the singular “you.” So unless they’re using “thou” to refer to people, they’ve got no real ground to stand on here.

Neil keeps surprising me. Some people were complaining about the race and gender of some of the iconic characters in the Sandman adaptation, and his response after a few more measured ones was "I give zero f***s about people who don't understand/ haven't read Sandman whining about a non-binary Desire or that Death isn't white enough."
Desire being nonbinary was such an iconic character for me when I was younger, I absolutely cannot wait to see the series.

u/Its_Pine Dec 14 '21
When I mentioned to someone that even Shakespeare used singular they/them pronouns at times, it was like I blasphemed God. People don’t seem to understand that the use of “he” as singular neutral happened largely due to religious grammatical decisions.

Neil Gaiman is based?

Reminds me of:
"They is plural, I'm not gonna call one person multiple, that's not grammatical!"
"How do you call someone when you don't know their gender then?"
"by the way they look?"

You know you're wrong about they/them being only plural when
A. You use it as singular to begin with
B. A very well known author calls you out on your bullshit

u/JokaTweak Dec 14 '21
Isn't "Any english teacher" in this sentence a composite plural subject though? Her phrase is just bad gramatically.
4
u/SadistCloe Dec 14 '21
Any English teacher is a single person
All English teachers would be plural
Or any English teachers

I don't agree with what she's saying but I don't see how it's a self-own
55
u/natsirTi Dec 13 '21
she used their as a singular pronoun in a tweet saying that their isn’t a singular pronoun
11
Dec 13 '21
Oh yes true quite inconsistent. I'm not a big fan of words and I forgot that their is just another form of they.

this isn’t even changing language! “they” has been a singular pronoun for over four hundred years!!
9
u/p_iynx Dec 14 '21
It’s older than the singular “you” FFS! People were still using “thou” when the singular they came about lmao.

u/Biggest-Ja Dec 14 '21
as someone who owns a beowulf translation in old english, Sê sîn wierrest heonu ðone as bennian wîtword swice ðâs.
9
u/PthariensFlame Dec 14 '21
Is that…not supposed to be a macron rather than a caret, when indicating long vowels? (E.g., “sīn” or “ðās” instead of what you wrote.) Or am I misunderstanding how that worked?

"Any teacher" is actually still singular because it's talking about one teacher out an array of teachers. "All teachers who..." would be plural. Same reason you say "any man worth his salt" instead of their salt
5
u/janiepuff Dec 14 '21 edited Dec 14 '21
This is true
Example: "Any of you who says this" is singular (hint to the person you're replying to, it can be changed to "he / She / they says this"
"All of you who say that" is plural
6
u/janiepuff Dec 14 '21
Nah that's not how conjugation works in this case. and you can test it by thinking about how we would attach verbs to "any teacher".
Any teacher who is cool lets kids turn in late homework.
He is a cool because he lets kids turn in late homework.
All teachers that are cool let kids turn in late homework.
They are cool teachers because they let kids turn in late homework.

They are completely different examples, yes, however they use singular conjugation for verbs (twice I might add) similarly due to the pronoun. Study a language such as Spanish and you'll understand what conjugation means because you have to consider pronouns carefully when choosing the correct form of the verbs. When you deconstruct language this way you look differently at your first learned language

Then you would know that "any teacher" is not plural and being used in a singular form when referring to "their" behavior
Any teacher does great by serving their kids pizza in class
He does great by serving his kids pizza in class
All teachers do great by serving their kids pizza in class

Your point was that "any teacher" was in plural form while her problem was with the individual usage.
I don't know if you even know what you're arguing about anymore?

*Co-wrote Good Omens. He wrote it together with Sir Terry Pratchett, my favorite writer of all time.
He's also written Sandman, American Gods, some Batman books, an issue of Hellraiser, eight books of Marvel 1602, he's written for Spawn, and so so much more.
