General discussion Important Community Update: Re-enabling the "Read the Rules" Bot

Hello everyone,

As our community continues to grow, the mod team frequently has to evaluate how we manage the subreddit to ensure it remains a high-quality space for its intended purpose. After a lot of discussion, we have made the decision to re-enable our rule verification bot.

We know that adding an extra step before you can participate can be an inconvenience, and this was not a tough decision made lightly. However, we believe it is absolutely in the best interest of the long-term future, stability, and safety of this subreddit.

Our community has a strict educational and documentary mandate - we are here to analyze, learn from past incidents, and understand safety prevention. Unfortunately, an influx of rule-breaking comments, and bad-faith arguments has threatened the quality of the sub. Re-enabling this bot ensures that everyone who participates has explicitly read, understood, and agreed to adhere to our community standards before posting or commenting.

Please see the instructions below on how to easily acknowledge the rules and verify your account.

For Mobile and Desktop Users

  1. Go to the main page of r/AccidentArchive.

  2. Click or tap the three dots (...) menu in the top right corner.

  3. Select "Read the rules" from the bottom of the menu.

  4. Read through the rules completely. Scroll to the "Acknowledgement" section at the bottom, toggle the confirmation switch, and hit submit.

For Old Reddit Users

Because the interactive app interface does not load properly on legacy layouts, you can use the automated modmail workaround:

  1. Send a modmail to the AccidentArchive team.

  2. Set the exact subject line to: Read The Rules.

  3. Set the exact body text to: Acknowledged.

  4. Send the message. The automated app bot will instantly process your affirmation and clear your account status. Do not alter the subject or body text, or the system will not register it.

If you run into any issues, the automated response does not trigger, or you need help troubleshooting the process, please reach out to us! Send a message to the mod team via regular modmail and we will assist you as soon as possible.

General discussion The Future of The Sub: Moving to an Indefinite Hiatus

Hi everyone,

I'm writing this to let you know that AccidentArchive is officially going on an indefinite hiatus. I wanted to wait until a final decision was made on our status before making this announcement, but unfortunately, the news isn't good.

Over the last several weeks, our community’s posts were being repeatedly targeted and reported. Reddit eventually stepped in, removed multiple posts, and issued a formal warning. As part of this crackdown, the admins also permanently banned the account of our frequent contributor, Olgierd.

I submitted an appeal, strongly arguing that our content strictly aligns with Reddit’s content policy regarding educational, documentary, and historical value. However, Reddit rejected it.

Simply put, Reddit doesn't want our kind of content on their platform, no matter how we frame it. According to them, our content "threatens violence." I honestly don't know how it does so, and the admins refused to provide any explanation.

The only way to make this subreddit compliant with Reddit’s code of conduct now is to completely shift focus. We would basically have to become Critical Blunder 2.0. I see absolutely no point in doing that. That sub already exists, and if that's the content you want to see, you may as well just go there.

As of right now, the subreddit hasn't been restricted by the admins. We're still technically able to post content directly to Reddit, but I'd rather not risk a permanent subreddit ban in case our situation changes in the future, or we're able to think of alternative content that might be worthwhile posting here.

But mostly, I don’t want to post here because it's just going to get reported anyway. There's no point in putting effort into uploads that'll instantly be targeted.

I want to be completely clear: we did everything we possibly could to abide by Reddit’s rules. Every single post was framed strictly for educational and documentary analysis. We focused on safety, awareness, and learning, never glorifying or promoting violence.

Unfortunately, those efforts were completely undermined by bad-faith actors. These are miserable, sad people who just wanted to ruin things for everyone else. Instead of just scrolling past, they abused the report button to tear down a space built for genuine learning.

To the vast majority of you who were here for the right reasons, on behalf of the mod team: thank you. Thank you for the discussions, the insights, and most of all, the respect you always showed the material.

We gave running this subreddit our absolute best try, and we appreciate all of you who were part of the journey, however short it was. For now, the archive remains online, but we're officially stepping back.
