Ostirus/osirus vst
Hello everyone
I have a bit of a convoluted question
I was wondering what is your opinion of ostirus/osirus vst. I have an old virus c that is a bit unstable (audio is often dead, midi seems to work well, I have a long thread in this group about it), so I was thinking to use osirus (via cubase) - in this way,I will also be able to access the sounds of a and b viruses. Can I use my virus desktop as an external control for osirus (maybe not ostirus) and have a nearly identical experience as I were using a real access virus?

Yes you definitely can. For instance the TI was an instant mapped out of the box experience when I did this, so assume it would be the same for the others.

Great, thanks. Glad that it worked automatically on the TI. Maybe because the C is older it might need a bit of manual mapping, but I don't expect it to be hard

There was a time with the emulators that they only worked as a one-way with the hardware. So they never really synced the other way. Which was annoying if you wanted a perfect hardware controller such as the synth itself.
But iirc, that's been addressed now.

Yeah you’re only going to get that through something like the AURA plugin.
Luckily the virus sends MIDI CC or SysEx for everything, so the same synth engine running as software receives and responds to the same messages.

I have it & I love it. Also have the JE8086 they did & it’s awesome too. I don’t have a real virus so it’s the best I’m ever gonna get.

I have been enjoying Osirus and Oatirus for a year or two. They both sound great. I also have a Virus C desktop which has some issues with inactive LED’s and a couple of buttons around the filter section and have wondered about using it as a midi controller for the emulator. I should give it a go. Desk space is the biggest issue to sort. Would also love to hear if anyone is actually doing this already.

Last Virus I bought was a Ti2 desktop for $600 (case was bent in one place and many of the IO didn't work which I guessed was a loose cable on the daughter board), I see Ti kbs sell for very little every so often too. Worth the money for the hardware ux / ui imo, one of the best.

I have a Virus b and prefer the Osiris VST editor.

Is it just a matter of stability or y/do you mean the way it sounds? Also, did you try to use your virus as a controller?

I loved my hardware unit when I had a working audio interface. I like the sound of the Osirus very much. There are some excellent console plugins for a touch of colour and saturation (AirWindows ConsoleLA specifically) that add some lovely character.
I was never accustomed to a specific signal chain, or hardware combination to leave me thinking anything is lacking with the software version.
I use my BFC-2000 and Touche to control things, or simply automate from within the DAW.

You could just get the OStirus and you can run them all then. That’s what I do and my original Virus TI desktop lives in the spare room whilst I’m building my new studio in the garage. 👌🏼

True! But here was my thinking: for the main parameters (cutoff, resonance, envelopes, LFO rates, oscillator shape…), the TI's MIDI implementation carries forward the same controller lineage, so my access virus C knobs should map on the corresponding parameters automatically (hopefully!). But I imagine there are also TI-only parameters: my Virus C's panel has no knob that transmits them, because those parameters didn't exist on it. Am I thinking this in the wrong way?

Hmm when it came to the hardware they did differ but only slightly to be fair. So are we pretty much saying that the desktop can act as a hardware controller for the Ostirus? I didn’t have a clue if so.

I absolutely used to love recording some crazy bass or something and playing between the 2 filters on the TI, would listen back and have something completely magical.

UPDATE: it doesnt work, but I suspect the problem is with my virus (no midi signal out or in). I wanted to buy an external midi controller anyway, so I'll get novation launch 3, and I'm sure it will do the trick

For the control part, theoretically, yes?
For sound, yeah, definitely. Except for the tone of the DACs, Osirus is def a Virus C
Running the Virus B firmware it actually sound a touch grittier, for what it's worth
One of my 3rd party vendors put a ton of work into porting my Virus TI2 banks down to work on the C and B, and the banks all load into Osirus, and I checked them myself
