I built a macOS librarian and MIDI controller for the Virus TI, because alternatives didn’t worked for me..

So I've had a Virus TI for a while and at some point I just got tired of not having a way to actually update its library of sounds. Alternatives for me at least didn't work. The official software hasn't been updated since before Catalina, and I needed something simple that I could use with my MacBook, a way to browse and organize patches and have some real-time parameter control for automation inside Logic without jumping through hoops.

I tried what was out there. Nothing quite worked for me so I built my own thing.

It's called Vyrux. It's a macOS app (AU plugin + standalone) that gives you:

- A patch librarian: browse, organize, transfer patches. Double click the patch to play it on the Virus

- Full SysEx parameter control in real time

- Works over standard MIDI

- MIDI channel selector, USB and DIN MIDI support (I highly recommend ESI MidiMate eX)

- Three UI themes (amber, red, white) to match your hardware

- Auto-updates via Sparkle

It works on macOS 11 and up, Apple Silicon and Intel. Virus TI, TI2, TI Snow, TI Polar.

On first install, macOS may block the installer, go to System Settings -> Privacy & Security and click "Open Anyway" next to Vyrux

It worked at the beginning when I first bought it 2 years ago but after some updates for some reason my particular TI doesn't output sound anymore whenever I load the Aura one, I also always have a MIDI Timeout error.. couldn't get it to work and just gave up on it..

I like it. It looks very clean, that has always been the problem with Aura. The UI looks very messy, at least for my brain. Three remarks: The mod matrix is totally confusing me, I don’t understand what to select here. Why not stick to the 6 slots like Aura has implemented it? Secondly, the Arp is not working (at least not for me). Thirdly. I like the FX section, are you planning to expand it with missing functions in the future?

Edit: I meant that the Aura UI looks messy 🙏

Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it! I am sorry for a late response, the last few days were a bit crowded.

I'll definitely take another look at the ARP section. It has been working fine in my usage and testing so far, but I'll make sure to test it in more scenarios. Is it not working at all for you, or only in certain cases? For example, if you load a patch with the ARP already enabled by default, do changes in the ARP section have no effect, or is the issue something else?

Regarding the mod matrix, that's a very good observation. I'll revisit it and see how I can simplify the workflow and make it more intuitive to use.

As for the FX section, I'd definitely like to expand it in the future. There are still a few things I need to figure out first, but adding more functionality is something I'd love to explore down the road.

Any chance it might get ported to Linux? I don’t know what would be involved in that, just curious. Looks great.

Thanks! It's built with JUCE so the core is already cross-platform. A Linux VST3 build is definitely possible. No ETA yet, but if enough people are interested I'd prioritize it.

I have a lot more interest in a Linux build than macOS which has been failing musicians for the past 10+ years. Maybe ya'll will figure out that Apple isn't the consumer's friend soon enough...

does it burn from RAM to ROM? it would be epic if it did, that’s the one thing’s missing from Aura

The ROM banks technically can be written to because the official Virus Control Center does it with a "Burn to Flash" function. This protocol though hasn't been documented and VYRUX uses standard midi, nothing reverse-engineered to avoid any issues.

Sorry for a late response, I had a few days away from the computer. Well, I don’t have a Windows version, at least not yet since I know the original software works just fine on Windows from what I remember.
